Did you know that the "Father of Black History" started his journey as a sharecropper and a miner? ⛏️📖

Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950) understood more than most that education is the ultimate tool for securing and maximizing our divine right to freedom. Born to formerly enslaved parents in New Canton, Virginia, he overcame immense obstacles to ensure that the history of African Americans would never be forgotten.

Today, we honor his legacy and the work that continues through the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH®).

While walking the blue carpet at the NAACP Creative Honors, Roland Martin challenged members of the Divine Nine to step up.

Referencing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s book "Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?," Martin reminded us that Black fraternities and sororities are one of the four core institutions meant to liberate Black America.

Yet, he believes many organizations are falling short of that mission by focusing too heavily on "insular business."

Martin challenged D9 members to shift their focus from the college glory days of "running the yard" to actually running their local governments.

🕊️ A Giant Has Fallen.

Today, our community and the world mourn the passing of Reverend Jesse Jackson — a man whose voice shook the halls of power and whose heart never stopped beating for the least, the lost, and the left behind.

From marching alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the front lines of Selma, to founding Operation PUSH, to making history as one of the first Black Americans to mount a serious presidential campaign, Rev. Jackson spent his entire life proving that justice is not given — it is demanded, organized, and fought for.

He taught us that "I am Somebody" — not as a slogan, but as a declaration of God-given dignity that no system of oppression could ever erase. He reminded us that our votes are sacred, our voices matter, and our community deserves a seat at every table where decisions are made.

Here in Leavenworth, Kansas, we know what it means to build something from the ground up, to fight for your community, and to pour your heart into the people around you. Rev. Jackson embodied all of that and more. He fought for Black-owned businesses, economic equity, and the kind of community empowerment that reminds us all why we do what we do every single day.

While our hearts are heavy today, we stand on the foundation he helped build. His lifelong command — "Keep Hope Alive" — is not just a phrase. It is a charge. A calling. And a promise we must keep.

Rest in Power, Reverend Jesse Jackson. Your legacy lives in every community that dares to stand up, speak out, and never give up. 🙏🏾✊🏾

Celebrating a Legacy of Service and Justice 🏛️✨

The Leavenworth Community Service Organization was deeply honored to host Kansas State Senator David Haley as our keynote speaker for this year’s Black History Month banquet. This year’s theme, "A Century of Black History Commemorations," was perfectly personified by Senator Haley, who is currently in his 32nd year in the Kansas Legislature—serving as the longest-standing member of the Kansas Senate.

Senator Haley’s impact on our state is profound. From the landmark "Scruffy’s Law" to the establishment of the "Silver Alert" system for our seniors, his legislative pen has protected the most vulnerable among us. His tireless advocacy for the abolition of the death penalty and compensation for the wrongfully incarcerated speaks to a career built on the foundation of true justice.

It was a poignant moment to reflect on his family’s multi-generational contributions to American history. As the son of the late US Ambassador George W. Haley and the nephew of ROOTS author Alex Haley, the Senator continues a powerful tradition of leadership and storytelling that resonates far beyond Kansas.

Pictured here: CSO President Lakei Evans presents Senator Haley with a certificate of appreciation for his inspiring words and lifelong commitment to our community.

Leavenworth Legend: William Dominick Matthews (1827–1906)

Born free in Maryland, William Dominick Matthews was a successful sailor who moved to Leavenworth in 1856 seeking economic freedom. He quickly became a prominent businessman and a vital leader of the Underground Railroad, transforming his home into a protected station for those escaping slavery.

Civil War Trailblazer
When the war began, Matthews didn't wait for permission to lead. He organized the First Kansas Colored Volunteer Infantry, becoming the highest-ranking Black officer in the Union Army at the time. In October 1862, his troops made history at the Battle of Island Mound, the first time Black soldiers saw combat in the Civil War.

A Lasting Legacy
Despite facing systemic discrimination that temporarily stripped him of his rank, Matthews served with distinction until 1865, ending the war as a First Lieutenant. Returning to Leavenworth, he became a pivotal figure in Kansas politics and a dedicated family man.

Matthews’ life remains a testament to bravery and the fight for justice right here in our community.

The Power of a Proclamation: Why These Documents Matter to Our Community

You may have seen news about Mayor Bauder's Black History Month proclamation to the Leavenworth Community Service Organization. But have you ever wondered about the history behind proclamations and why they're more than just ceremonial paper?

Proclamations have roots stretching back centuries, originally used by monarchs and leaders to announce important decrees to their people. In America, they evolved into tools for presidents, governors, and mayors to formally recognize events, causes, and contributions that deserve public attention.

When a mayor issues a proclamation, it's the city speaking with one official voice. It says, "This matters to us. This is part of our story. This deserves our collective attention."

For Black History Month, proclamations do something crucial—they move Black history from the margins to the center of our community conversation. They acknowledge that the achievements, struggles, and contributions of Black Americans aren't footnotes in our local story; they're essential chapters.

In cities like Leavenworth, where every voice counts in building community fabric, these proclamations create space for education, celebration, and connection. They signal to Black residents: you belong here, your history is our history, your contributions are valued. And they remind all residents that our community is richer when we honor the full tapestry of American experience.

Last week's Black History Month celebration brought our community together to learn, celebrate, and strengthen the bonds that make Leavenworth home for all of us.

That's the power of a proclamation. It opens doors.
