🇺🇸 This Memorial Day weekend, the Carceral Accountability Council pauses to honor the brave service members who laid down their lives for our country.

Millions of courageous men and women have died to protect and secure the very freedoms we enjoy today. We take note that right here in our community, the Leavenworth National Cemetery stands as one of the most powerful visual reminders of that massive sacrifice.

We wish our entire community a safe, peaceful, and reflective weekend. Let us never take their sacrifices for granted.

We are incredibly honored to announce that the Carceral Accountability Council will be receiving the 2026 Faith Into Action Award at this year’s Kansas Interfaith Action (KIFA) Annual Event on June 2nd!

We do not take this recognition lightly. Every day, we are reminded that our work is far from over, and this award serves as both a powerful validation and a driving motivation to keep pushing forward.

A heartfelt thank you to Kansas Interfaith Action for this immense honor and for fueling our dedication to creating positive, lasting change that impacts lives in our community.

Join us at our Annual Event on June 2 as we celebrate our 2026 Faith Into Action Award Recipient - the Carceral Accountability Council of Leavenworth!

KIFA's Faith Into Action Award is a way to recognize people and organizations who have been consistently engaged in a particular area of KIFA’s work. The Carceral Accountability Council (CAC) formed in 2025 as a response to the news that Core Civic was planning to open an ICE detention center in Leavenworth. CAC has collaborated with various organizations, including KIFA, to host vigils, protests, rallies, and now is turning their energy and resources to advocating for public prisons that prioritize safety, human dignity, and total visibility. Together, KIFA and CAC proclaim that !

In 2021, Marcia Levering’s life was forever changed while serving as a Corrections Officer at the Leavenworth CoreCivic facility. Due to severe understaffing and institutional neglect, Marcia was the victim of a brutal attack that left her with permanent disabilities.

Marcia’s story is a powerful reminder of the systemic issues in carceral systems where executive decisions often compromise the safety of both staff and those in their care.

This is our chance to support Marcia on her long road to recovery while calling for the institutional accountability she deserves.

Please consider donating to Marcia's GoFundMe and sharing this post to help us reach our goal.
