Today we're highlighting Kristen Gilje! Kristen is a beloved Guild faculty and full-time artist who works in her Bellingham WA studio on art commissions for sacred spaces. She makes large colorful works on silk for seasonal use, which can be seen in churches from coast to coast. Kristen spent 9 years as Artist in Residence at Holden village, near Chelan WA, where she learned the value of making art for and with a worshiping community. A 1978 graduate from St. Olaf College, her senior concentration was entitled “Art as Expression of the Holy.” Kristen has been combining ideas about art and theology in her work ever since and will be teaching Watercolor in the Sacred Milieu this summer July 5th-11th!

Introducing Nicki Lang, who will be teaching printmaking with us June 28-July 3! Nicki is a creative dabbler. After making leather goods for ten years, she picked up a palette knife and started painting Pacific Northwest landscapes. Lately you can find her hand-building with clay and playing with both sculpture and functional forms. When she is not doing visual art, Nicki can be found writing, playing the banjo, or spending time outside with her husband, two boys and goofy dog, Lupinella. Experience the joyful creativity inspired by the Guild's natural habitat with Nicki this June when she returns to teach Plants, Prints & Place!

If you have ever marveled at a Guild mug - particularly our "Art Faith" mugs - you have admired the work of master ceramic artist Jim Halvorson! Jim has been a potter for nearly 50 years and was initially introduced to the ceramic art while a student at Valparaiso University. Jim received his MFA from Rochester Institute of Technology where he studied with Bauhaus trained potter Frans Wildenhain. In 1990 Jim achieved his teachers certification and taught ceramics in addition to other art classes in the Indianapolis Public School system. We are so thrilled to have Jim returning to the Guild to teach with us this summer and invite you to consider this incredible opportunity to learn from a true master-- June 21st-June 27th! This month we are honored to share work by Kelsey Shirley in the Guild library. We will have a reception and opening at 7pm on Friday May 8th followed by an artist talk at 7:30pm!

Kelsey Shirley is a bed based artist who explores themes of illness and the warping of time, memory, and identity that come alongside it.

After becoming profoundly disabled with myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), Kelsey lost the ability to make art for years and only recently has her health improved enough to create again. For the last year she has been exploring scanography as an accessible method of making, scanning the objects around her on a flatbed scanner and making distortions that reflect her lived experience.
