With the historic warmup in most of the country, some of the best fishing of the year is right now. I thought I would give a little insight on some things I’ve learned over the years.
I like to look for fish moving from the channel banks to the transitions and points during the day. Shad and other baitfish movement will vary during the day and the bass are sure to follow. The channel swing areas (red arrows) signify deep water and the transition banks (yellow dots) are when the bank transitions from deep channel swing bluff-type banks into bigger rock, ledges, chunk rock to gravel or gravel points in most of the mountain lakes found in much of the country. Depending on water temperature, spinnerbaits, crankbaits and jigs are great choices. Colder weather is sure to follow any warm up and if fishing a jig, trailer choices can make a huge difference. My recommendation is to pay attention to the conditions like wind direction, baitfish and wildlife activity. Experience has shown me that trailers with less action like a Jewel Finesse Craw or other small crawfish imitator are best in those post-frontal conditions with an easterly flow. Wind direction with a west or southerly flow usually means trailers with more action like a twin tail grub, VersaCraw or other plastics with more erratic action. In general, I look for activity around me. Less activity, less trailer action, more activity, more trailer action. The VersaCraw has all these attributes; just pull apart the appendages depending on how much action you’d like to have.
Now, let’s go catch some fish!
