Safe in Austin

Safe in Austin We rescue the animals that need us, so they can rescue the children that need them even more. Safe in Austin is a judgment free zone!

“You never soar so high as when you stoop down to help a child or an animal.”

Our story starts with a dog appropriately named Angel. She was our son’s Autism Service dog, and she changed his entire world. We have always loved animals, but when Angel joined our family it became insanely clear how the love of an animal can be literally miraculous! Angel gave my son confidence and strength beyond a

nything I was capable of doing as his mother. She provided protection from his fears, a gentle understanding of his moods and emotions, and gave him a feeling of control over his disabilities. Angel opened our eyes to the healing power of animals and animal-assisted therapy. We will never be able to repay her for helping shape my baby into the high functioning boy he is today, but we can help others experience the same healing power of the innate bond between people and animals. Our goal here at Safe in Austin is to rescue animals from abuse and neglect, to rehabilitate and rehome the ones that are able, and to provide a loving environment for those that have been through enough already. Then, we invite human hearts that need healing to come meet these magnificent creatures, hear their stories, hug their necks, pet their bellies, and find connection in a relationship that is without judgment or fear. Our rescues are grateful and happy, and they all have a story to tell. We have some animals that have been abused beyond your wildest imagination but that still show us nothing but total forgiveness and trust. Kids and young adults that come from trauma can relate to the histories of these animals and find hope in the future for both of them. At-risk youth can feel the connection and unconditional love from these animals and slowly their hearts start to soften! Children with special needs can find comfort and encouragement when learning about animals with special needs of their own and in learning how we all belong to each other no matter our differences. Healing can be hard and scary, but these animals can show us the way! We know that not everyone can afford expensive therapy sessions and high priced programs. Our goal is to offer a place of healing and happiness that is available to everyone. Visits and events are affordable, fun, worry free, and are guaranteed to touch your heart! Our family’s struggles has taught us that nothing is black and white, and everyone has a story that is worth sharing. We just want you to meet our babies, take some of their love, and share it with others! We know there is a magic that comes with snuggling up with our 250-pound potbelly Peter (who was once thrown away and left for dead), or playing with our fun goat family Sapphire, Curly, and Ruby. Sapphire was rescued from an animal hoarding situation where she had been bred with a goat three times her size, and I slept on the porch for two weeks with her in order to be there for the extremely traumatic birth of her really big triplets! We want you to meet Spotty, a shy little dog with the world’s biggest ears, who lived completely on her own in a neighborhood green belt for at least four years. We spent four days in the streets with her, and then two nights with her in a stranger’s garage waiting for her to have a litter of puppies. It was another three days before she finally trusted me enough to let me touch her and bring her and the puppies back to the ranch! And Duchess, our sweet momma who was rescued from a dog fighting ring where she was used as a breeder dog. She was bred over and over again in a tiny cage hidden under a tarp. She tries to mother any babies she sees and has in her four years with us tried really hard to nurse all manner of puppies, kittens, ducklings, chicks, bunnies, a tortoise, and even a few human babies! Our little piggy Wilbur shares a beautiful adoption story of having a mother that loved him very much but knew she couldn't provide the kind of life he deserved and brought him here to the rescue ranch to be free and loved. We also have sweet Silkie Chickens that like to cuddle, an abandoned bunny that will eat from your hand, a calm and deliberate tortoise that reminds all of us to slow down and smell (or eat) the roses! We have giant pigs that were saved from the slaughterhouse, and love nothing more than to roll over for belly rubs or snout kisses! And we always have precious baby goats running around waiting for a hug! Safe in Austin is very much a work in progress.... but aren’t we all, really?! We are working on new and exciting things and can’t wait to see what the future holds! We appreciate so much you following this crazy journey with us and hope to see you out for a visit soon! Our goal on social media is to simply brighten your day with pictures and stories of spoiled animals that never again have to be afraid, and to show you the difference these animals can make on the hearts of people that come to visit them!

Three years ago today was Champion’s final flight around the rescue, the last lap, his last superhero cape adventure. After letting him fly around the rescue one final time we kept the promise we had made him from the very beginning; that when his body was done fighting, we would listen, we would let him rest.

Tomorrow morning will mark three years since the day after Champion. Three years since waking up to a rescue without our miracle cow. I remember looking out that morning and thinking what now?

Because the truth is, Champion wasn’t just a cow. He was proof that different doesn’t mean broken, proof that impossible and possible are often separated only by creativity, stubbornness, and a whole lot of love, proof that when the world says no, your tribe finds another way. For years, children came through our gates and watched a paraplegic cow race across a field in a wheelchair while they wore superhero capes and chased after him.

But Champion’s story didn’t end three years ago. It lives in every child who learns they are worthy of love, every animal who gets a second chance, every person who decides to keep showing up after heartbreak.

There are still children arriving at this rescue carrying things that feel impossible.
Diagnoses.
Trauma.
Fear.
Loneliness.

And every single day, we keep trying to teach them what Champion spent his life teaching us. You belong here.

Today, we have 2,000 left to raise in our matching grant. Normally I would have a clever fundraiser post. Tonight I just keep thinking about promises. The promise we made to Champion. The promise we make to every child and animal who comes through these gates. The promise that we will keep showing up, keep fighting for them, and remind them they are worthy.

Funding is low and needs are high. Camp starts this week, bringing new needs, chaos and magic. So tonight, if you have ever loved Champion, or been inspired by him, would you help us continue the story he helped write? We are only 2,000 away and thanks to our matching grant, every dollar given will be doubled.

Three years later, we’re still keeping our promise and together, we keep showing up. Help us honor Champion.

The best thing about the rescue?

The animals don’t care who you were yesterday.

They just want to know if you’re coming back tomorrow.

Happy Gotcha Day Lady Peppermoon!

The first photo and the last two photos were taken exactly one year apart to the minute. It feels practically perfect for a dog who has somehow managed to make an entire year feel both impossibly long and like it just started yesterday.

Twelve months ago she fit in our arms.

Today she weighs over 135 pounds, has consumed roughly 47 dog beds, believes every body of water was created specifically for her enjoyment, and has never once had a thought that wasn’t immediately acted upon.

She is equal parts black bear, emotional support creature, field trip enthusiast, professional snuggler, and walking insurance claim.

Yet somehow, despite all of that, she has become one of the best things to happen around here.

The chaos is Immeasurable and yet, the love she brings is even bigger.

A year ago she was a fluffy little puppy tucked against my chest today she stands tall enough to wrap her paws around my shoulders and look me in the eye.

Happy Gotcha Day, Peppermoon.

Please stop eating furniture.

Love,
Everyone

The world spends a lot of time telling us what doesn’t fit.

Too different.Too challenging.Too disabled.Too much.

But the animals never seem to get that memo.

This little boy in our Healing Hearts Animal Care program has autism.

Tom, the miniature horse beside him, came from a neglect situation and was born with genetic deformities that make him look and move a little differently than other horses.

Both have likely experienced being underestimated.

Both have likely had people focus on what makes them different before taking the time to see what makes them extraordinary.

Yet here they are.

Not comparing. Not judging. Not trying to change one another.

Just walking side by side.

That’s one of the greatest lessons our animals teach every day.

Connection doesn’t require perfection.

It simply requires showing up as you are.

❤️

If you’ve been wanting to visit the sanctuary this summer, now is the perfect time!

Our one-day and three-day Healing Hearts Summer Camps are now open for registration, and we’ve also posted dates for our Pride Public Day and Christmas in July Public Day on the website.

Come meet the animals, make new friends, and discover why healing often begins with a simple connection.

Good morning from the puppy nursery where everyone is growing except the adult humans, who have all apparently aged seventeen years in the last two weeks.

But the puppies are officially two weeks old. Their eyes are opening, their bellies are round and they are learning that they have a voice. They remain awkward swimming potatoes, but their legs will learn to leg any day now.

One of them rolled over, looked shocked about it, and then immediately fell asleep.

Meanwhile, Precious is healing, every day she trusts a little more. Everyday she gets a little more sleep and little less survival mode. Every time her tail wags, it makes my heart jump for joy.

The puppies are opening their eyes to the world for the first time. And Precious is slowly learning that the world isn’t quite as scary as it used to be. It’s a pretty magical thing to watch.

Anyway, everyone is fed, everyone is warm and that’s basically the equivalent of winning the lottery.

But…. Same though!
Am I right?!

How many times a day do I wish I could just scream like that?!! I think he’s reminding me to let it all out!!

Meet some new babies that showed up Sunday!

These two boys are neurotypical 12 day old Nubian goats! They were born as triplets on a ranch that uses goat milk to make stuff. A momma trying to feed triplets and supply milk to the ranchers was not going to work, hence the reason the boys ended up here with us.
I normally don’t take in neurotypical babies, but if I’m being honest, I said yes because of all the loss we have had recently.
We just needed a sure thing.
A happy ending.
Some silly, jumping, screaming, adorable little bundles of life to bring some joy back to this place. We’ve had way too much heartache.

So everyone meet Nimbus and Kelp! Names after the character in the book “Weather Together”, one of our favorite children’s books about mental health!
Welcome to the family boys! 💙💙
