Eradicating poverty by increasing economic mobility

Established as a beacon of hope and support, the Community Action Partnership of Utah (CAP Utah) has been dedicated to eradicating poverty in the state since its founding in 1994. As the statewide association for Utah's Community Action Agencies, our mission is to lead, strengthen, and support these agencies, ensuring they have the resources and backing to effectively serve low-income families and individuals across Utah. Our Role: CAP Utah plays a pivotal role in the fight against poverty. While we don't often offer direct services to individuals, we empower the agencies that do. By providing them with training, resources, and advocacy, we ensure they can effectively assist those in need. Agencies We Support:

Poverty is not just a lack of income; it is a multi-dimensional problem that includes unsafe housing, limited healthcare, and a denial of human dignity and rights.

The United Nations declared October 17th as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty to help raise awareness of the struggles of poverty and the systemic issues that perpetuate it.

The best thing we can do is use our economic privilege to be a voice for those who may be discriminated against based on their income, and to call out unfair treatment and educate others on how we can create more opportunities for financial equality.

Poverty can oftentimes contribute to domestic violence.

When a victim is financially dependent on their abuser, it can be difficult to escape the situation. All types of abuse, but especially financial abuse can often lead to the perpetuation of poverty as the victim is unable to access money if funds are withheld or they're forced to quit their job.

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness month and while our local community action agencies don't directly offer Domestic Violence services, we want to share some resources that do.

If you or someone you know needs help, contact National Domestic Violence Hotline, 211, or Utah's LINK Line. All of them can offer help connecting to local support should you or someone you know need anonymous assistance.

My 529 is offering a special incentive for families with little ones born September 1, 2025, to August 31, 2026!

Assistance Generally requires household income to be at or below 150% of the federal poverty level, with priority given to vulnerable groups like the elderly, disabled, and young children.

Financial poverty may be the most common, but a lack of assets, supportive relationships, community connections, and access to opportunities can also make it difficult to achieve long-term stability.

Understanding the full picture of poverty helps us create solutions that address more than immediate needs. At Community Action Partnership of Utah, our goal is to help build pathways toward lasting stability and opportunity for Utahns.

What does poverty have to do with su***de? More than most people realize.

The constant stress of not knowing how you'll pay rent, keep the lights on, or put food on the table doesn't just strain your finances, it takes a serious toll on your mental health. And the data backs this up.

In Utah, an average of 685 people die by su***de every year. Adults experiencing significant financial hardship have nearly 3x the risk of anxiety and depression compared to those with no financial hardship.

These statistics are a reminder that when we address poverty, we're not just helping people pay their bills, we're supporting mental health, stability, and in some cases, saving lives.

That's what Community Action Agencies do every day.
