Comanche Language and Culture Preservation Committee Dynamic Comanche Language Revitalization
powering cultural renewal and
building a stronger, healthier, resilient community

During World War II, Comanche Code Talkers didn’t just translate words.
They created new ways to describe things in Comanche to save the world.

In this clip from a short film about out work, Dick Red Elk explains how tanks were described as turtles and how machine guns were compared to sewing machines using the Comanche word for gun.

That kind of thinking matters.
It shows a language actively adapting, observing, and responding in real time.

Dick Red Elk was also one of the founders of the Comanche Language and Cultural Preservation Committee, helping build foundations for the language work that continues today.

This Decoration Day, we honor the Comanche Code Talkers, Native veterans, and the generations who carry the language forward.

Their words are here.
And we’re still building from them.

It's Decoration Day/Memorial Day.

For many of our families, this day is about remembrance.

We visit cemeteries.
We clean graves.
We place flowers.
We gather with family and remember those who came before us.

We remember those who lost their lives protecting this country, yes—but also parents, grandparents, relatives, teachers, singers, speakers, and loved ones whose lives continue to shape our communities.

These acts of care matter.
They remind us that we are still connected to one another across generations.

Today we honor those who have gone on before us and carry their songs, stories, language, and memories forward.

Today is Native Nonprofit Day 💛

Native nonprofits do more than provide services.
We build community.
We create space for language, culture, education, food sovereignty, youth programs, archives, arts, and connection.

At CLCPC, that work looks like language classes, hymns, dictionaries, digital archives, family programming, cultural programming, recordings, games, community meals, and creating places where people feel safe enough to speak.

This work continues because our community continue to show up for it.

We’re grateful for every learner, volunteer, elder, donor, partner, and supporter who helps make this work possible.

Language is for everyone.

Tsaa piaʔa tabeni 💐
(Happy Mother’s Day)

Today we honor all of the mothers, grandmothers, aunties, caregivers, and women who pass down love, strength, stories, songs, and language from one generation to the next.

Thank you for all that you do.

Happy Mother’s Day from the CLCPC. 🌸

We were honored to attend the Walters Public Schools Indian Education Recognition Banquet last night.

It was wonderful to celebrate the graduates and the work of the students, families, and educators supporting Native students and cultures in Walters.

And yes—the Indian tacos and buffalo meat were amazing 😄

Afterward, we wrapped up our weekly Walters Comanche class with two very competitive rounds of sʉmʉ (our Comanche Uno), followed by Comanche hymns together.

Language. Community. Food. Laughter. Songs.

This is what reactivation of a speaking community looks like.

Our dictionaries didn’t happen all at once.

They’ve been built over time...
each edition capturing a different moment in the CLCPC's language work.

Together, they tell a bigger story.
One we’re continuing to build on.

We’ve been revisiting them lately.
More to come.

Our CLCPC spring Zoom classes

Testing lessons.
Clicking through assignments.
Finding what works (and what doesn’t 😄).

And most importantly—
showing up and speaking.

“You have to speak it to learn it.”
— Dr. Reaves Nahwooksy

That’s why our classes matter.

We create space to practice—
to try, to make mistakes, to laugh, and to keep going.

A safe space matters because that’s how language grows.

Join us this summer for our next round of Zoom classes,
with a focus on hymns.

CLCPC was honored to attend the Lawton Public Schools Indian Education Language Banquet last night.

We’re proud of all the Comanche and Kiowa students who have committed themselves to learning and using their languages.

It takes time, effort, and courage to show up and learn--and you’re doing it.

We also recognize the ongoing commitment of teachers, Martie Woothtakewahbitty and Carlo Chalepah, and the Lawton Public Schools and Raylisha York Stanley to support our languages and cultures. This work matters.

We’re grateful to be part of it because Language is for Everyone! ❤️💛💙|💙🩵🤍
