Better watch out for your kids this holiday season! Here are some helpful hints... and happy holidays to you and yours!

Hooray, hooray, it's St. Cecelia's Day! She's the patron saint of music. Vowing to remain a virgin, the legend says that she talked her husband Valerian into being baptized by Pope Urbanus in order to see the angel that protected her maidenhood. He agreed, got baptized, saw the angel, and the rest is history... or mystery, depends on how you look at it.

Ah, Dido... lament for your composer, Henry Purcell, who died on this day, November 21st, in 1695. We're not sure if he died of tuberculosis, or from a chill that he caught when his wife locked him out after a late night of theatre... either way, he was only 36 years old.

I'm just sitting here, reminiscing about all the wonderful performances at the Grounds for Sculpture event last Sunday... so much talent crammed into one afternoon! I'm already impatient for next year's festival...

The Guild’s 12th Annual Grounds for Sculpture Festival will be held on Sunday, October 16th, 2016. The day-long festival features performances by over a dozen different early music ensembles, including both vocal and instrumental ensembles. The performances take place in the East and West Galleries of the Seward Johnson Center for the Arts at the Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, NJ. As in past years, the Guild for Early Music has invited a youth ensemble to open the performances. This year, Stretto Youth Chamber Orchestra will begin the Festival with a program of Fantasias.

The public is invited to come and go, sampling the mini-concerts. An instrumental “petting zoo” will be open to all ages and will take place simultaneously with the concerts, in the adjacent auditorium. Strolling performers will play music outdoors in the gardens, weather permitting.

This year’s Festival theme is “the Zodiac,” marking the 12th year for this exciting event. Sculpture tours featuring works inspired by this theme are offered without additional charge during the afternoon.

The following ensembles will be performing in each location, listed in no particular order:

East Gallery

Stretto Youth Orchestra
Mostly Motets
Le Triomphe de l’amour
Les Agrements de musique
The Gloria Consort
La Fiocco
The Practitioners of Musick

West Gallery

Engelchor Consort
La Spirita Viola da gamba consort
Princeton Pro Musica Chamber Chorus
Musica Dolce
Riverview Early Music
Radiance Chamber Ensemble
Spectra Musica

See you there!

Hey everybody... GEM's 12th Annual Grounds for Sculpture Festival is only 18 short days away! The festival's theme this year is the Zodiac, since it's our 12th year doing this... nice, right? Though there are over a dozen instrumental and vocal early music ensembles performing in two galleries of the Seward Johnson Center for the Arts on that date, the Stretto Youth Chamber Orchestra will get the ball rolling with a program of Fantasias... stay tuned for more info!
