Sadie Hawkins Club

Sadie Hawkins Club Building self esteem and confidence levels in young girls, helping serve the community & state, educating youth. Advisor: Cathryn Shelton

Originally founded in the 1940's by Shirley Maghielse, to give girls in the Lincoln Park area a sense of unity & belonging. Cacey Shelton, Shirley Maghielse's granddaughter, was inspired when hearing about the work her grandmother did for the greater good of her community. In 2012, Cacey decided to re-establish the club her grandmother started to help young girls in Lawrence County, TN. With the h

elp of friends & family, Cacey and friend, Katie Heard, began to reach out to mentoring programs in Middle TN, to see what they could do to help. The "new" Sadie Hawkins Club focuses on mentoring young girls, boosting confidence levels, grooming, non-bullying, educating, & empowering young girls to believe that they can do the impossible! The club helps many citizens, and works with the "I Am For Kids!" Mentoring Program in Lawrence County. Cathryn Shelton, Shirley's daughter, is the Advisor. "Girls are not property. They have the right to determine their own destiny." -- Unicef

Education offers girls the best chance to determine their own destiny but, in many parts of the world, it's often a struggle for girls to have access to education. To help children understand more about the challenge many girls face in going to school, check out the reading recommendations in our blog post "Mighty Girl Books on Children's Fight for Education" at http://www.amightygirl.com/blog/?p=4057

For two of our favorite books about girls and the power of education, we recommend "Razia's Ray of Hope: One Girl's Dream of an Education" for ages 7 to 10 (http://www.amightygirl.com/razia-s-ray-of-hope) and "A Girl Called Problem" for ages 9 to 14 (http://www.amightygirl.com/a-girl-called-problem).

For stories of both real-life and fictional girls and women confronting gender discrimination and prejudice in a multitude of forms, visit our "Gender Discrimination" section at http://www.amightygirl.com/books/social-issues/prejudice-discrimination?cat=69

For a highly recommended book for older teens and adults that discusses how girls and women are fighting back against oppression, check out: "Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide" at http://www.amightygirl.com/half-the-sky and the accompanying documentary, for ages 13 and up, at http://www.amightygirl.com/half-the-sky-documentary
