We had so much fun at the Lied Center Accessibility Open House yesterday evening!🎭🎧

Big thanks to Simple Mischief Studio for donating their time, talents, and creativity for their amazing show during the audio description demo.

🌸 How do you see a garden when your vision changes?

A garden may look bright, colorful, and full of detail—but vision loss can dramatically change how someone experiences that same space.

These images illustrate different ways vision loss may affect sight, including:
👁️ Diabetic retinopathy: patches or areas of missing vision
👁️ Macular degeneration: loss of central vision
👁️ Glaucoma & retinitis pigmentosa: narrowed or reduced visual fields
👁️ Cataracts: reduced clarity and contrast
👁️ Total blindness: no visual perception

At Audio-Reader, we believe everyone should have access to information, stories, and experiences—regardless of how they see the world.

We had a special visitor at our recent Audio Sale!

Luke had the opportunity to donate $100 to a nonprofit of his choice through the “It Matters” program at Ranjbar Orthodontics – and he chose Audio-Reader!

As the son of one of our staff members, Luke has been able to see firsthand the impact Audio-Reader has on our listeners, from hearing about his mom’s work to meeting some of the people we serve at Audio-Reader events over the years.

Luke stopped by our Audio Sale at the Lawrence Public Library to deliver his donation and pose for a photo with some of our staff and volunteers. Of course, we had to put a few of our favorite records to good use for the picture!

Thank you, Luke, for choosing Audio-Reader, and thank you to Ranjbar Orthodontics for creating a program that encourages young people to give back to organizations in their community. We are so grateful!

🤍🌿 MISSION: SPOT THE WHITE FLOWERS — COMPLETE! 🌿🤍

I headed into the Sensory Garden with ONE mission: find something white. 👀🌸
And somehow… I found FIVE different flowers!!!

After all that heat, the cooler weather has finally arrived, and our garden is the PERFECT place to slow down, relax, and enjoy the little things. There are so many different blooms, textures, scents, and colors waiting to be discovered!

And we’re just getting started! 👀🌿
Next up: a touch-and-feel challenge! We’ll explore plants with similar textures and learn how to distinguish between them just by touch. 🌿🖐️

👁️ Cataracts vs. Glaucoma — do you know the difference?

Both can affect your vision, but they affect the eye in very different ways.

☁️ Cataracts cause the eye’s lens to become cloudy, often leading to blurry or hazy vision, glare, and difficulty seeing at night.

🧿 Glaucoma damages the optic nerve and can cause gradual, permanent vision loss — often without noticeable symptoms in the early stages.

Knowing the difference matters. And regular eye exams can help detect problems before they significantly affect your vision. 💙

At Audio-Reader, we believe everyone deserves access to information about eye health and the tools to better understand their vision.

Our September Audio Sale is officially in the books - and what a weekend it was! Thanks to an incredible team of volunteers and an amazing community of shoppers, the sale brought in more than $16,500 to benefit Audio-Reader!

These photos capture just a few of the many hands that made the weekend possible. We simply could not do this without our volunteers. With their help, we had over 150 pieces of audio equipment and over 2,000 records available for shoppers, hundreds of cassette tapes, and musical instruments. Whew!

A huge thank you to everyone who shopped the sale, volunteered their time, donated items, spread the word and supported Audio-Reader - and to our friends at the LPL Friends & Foundation for partnering with us once again on a great sale!
