If you don't want to have fun, hear a great speaker, make great friends, then Lawrence Kiwanis is NOT where you want to be.

This week we had the pleasure of hearing from Ruth DeWitt with Explore Lawrence. Ruth described how the Lawrence community embraced the Men's Algerian National World Cup soccer team. After 24 months planning with 363 planning meetings, the Algerian team arrived. They were embraced by the citizens of Lawrence and they embraced back. What a fun, exciting experience. Lawrence was featured in several media stories by international media and by Adam Kinzinger's blog on Face Book. A true feel good story about the community.

Next week Bill Nix will be coming as Dr James Naismith. Thank you, Tom Lundblad, for arranging and sponsoring this special program. This will be a great meeting to invite guests and prospective members.

Our meetings are so much fun! We also manage to learn stuff. This week we heard from Colin Roust, Associate Dean, KU School of Music. He discussed several topics including using music as therapy and the KU Music Camp. Students work with kids in school too.

Some of the photos are courtesy of Nathan King with the Boys & Girls club.

Next week we will hear about the recent World Cup events presented by Ruth DeWitt with Explore Lawrence.

Our first meeting of the month has had its challenges. Today we tried a new to us place just around the corner. Not quite as noisy, but still a bit hard to hear. The food was very good. They had anchovies, something I really like.

We managed to have fun while we filled our tummies. Took pictures of our group actually showing faces. I love this bunch. Great Kiwanis members and friends.

A nice crowd to hear from Robert Bieniecki with Douglas County Emergency Management. They are a division of Douglas County Government. They consist of 3 full time staff, 1 part time, 3 duty officers, 2 equipment operators and 60 volunteers. They work to help the community prepare for and respond to and recover from disasters. They coordinate emergency management for all of Douglas County.

Next week our meeting will be at Morningstar Pizza, just around the corner to the northwest of Johnny's. We will be back at Johnny's in two weeks.

Another great meeting. This week we were updated about Lawrence-Douglas County Fire and Medical. Interim Fire Chief Joe Hardy, who is a second generation firefighter with the department, talked about his excellent command staff and those working under them. He explained that the department strives for a 4 minute response time. He invited us to tour the various stations.

Following the Chief's comments, our group devolved into bouts of humorous discussion and much laughter. A very fun meeting.

Another terrific program. Carrie Poe with the KU Small Business Development Center explained how that entity works with folks starting or running a small business as trusted advisors. The service is free and supported by U.S. Small Business Administration, Kansas Department of Commerce, KU School of Business, both Douglas County and the City of Lawrence and Osage County. Sign up is online and they work through Zoom, In-person, your business site, or community spaces.

Next week Fire Chief Joe Hardy will present.

A huge "Thank You" to all who turned out for another successful Birthday Beat.

Bobbie Flory has been the Executive Director of the Lawrence Home Builders Association for over 25 years. She is an advocate for builders and remodelers in our area. Bobbie told us that in 1994 over 600 single family permits were issued. So far this year just over 40 have been issued. Bobbie stated the biggest cost is in energy.

Another great turnout of fun members.

The first meeting of the month is in the main restaurant. Too noisy for a program but great to visit with our fellow members. As a plus, Kim Roehr with Capitol Federal turned in an application for a corporate membership.

Lots of fun pics taken for your viewing pleasure.

Sometimes the best laid plans go awry. Our scheduled speaker had the wrong date. We had a good crowd, so what to do? Why, enlist a visitor to give us a program on her previous job and how she feels about her new job with the Community Blood Center. Thank you Kim Clark for bringing your new staff member, Kaylea Cluck. She is delightful.

Lots of pictures of our numerous guests, one of whom may join our club as a member.

We will reschedule our planned speaker for sometime in November.

It was my great honor to introduce Barbara Ballad with the Dole Institute of politics. She is also a state representative serving the 44th district for the past 32 years. I have known Barbara since right before she was first elected.
Today she spoke about various displays in the center including a 911 display provided by funds raised by former president Bill Clinton and Senator Dole to commemorate that historic event.

We may have set a record for attendance - 28 - including two guests. The payout on 50/50 was $28 coincidentally. One of the guests who is a prospective member won that pot.

Thank you to Kimberley Merrill for being today's staff photographer.
