Another fun meeting. Due to new president Anup being under the weather, and President-elect Karen not in attendance, Jim led the meeting. Our speaker today was Jonathan Petty. He was introduced by Catherine Meacham. He is her neighbor and both live in Lecompton.
Jonathan spoke about Bald Eagles. Back in the day, many, many moons ago, the Bald Eagle was hunted for food. Hunted almost to extingshun. If Benjamin Franklin had his way, the turkey would be our National bird and as Jonathan pointed out, we would be eating eagle for Thanksgiving.
Today, Bald Eagles have made a great comeback and can be found around lakes, rivers, and streams all over Kansas and the rest of the country.

We continued our new member induction today with Carrie Poe. Carrie is sponsored by Kyle Roggenkamp. Thank you Kyle for bringing another awesome member to Kiwanis.

Next week we will induct Richard Bennett, formerly of Emporia Kiwanis. His sponsor is his daughter, Margann.

One of the big Kiwanis mysteries - why are the installation of officers meetings so lightly attended? Especially when we are inducting new members and the Lt
Governor, Cynthia Henry, is in attendance. No matter, we had a great meeting and lots of laughs. President Jim gave exit remarks and Kimberley Merrill came up with really nice gifts. What would we do without her!!!

On the inductions - we still have a few more to do in the next few weeks.

Incoming president, Anup Singh will do an excellent job. Running our crew is no easy task but he can do it!

A very busy meeting. Matt Llewellyn solicited members' assistance for the Honors Gala scheduled for Wednesday, November 4th.

Our program was provided by Susan Crawford and Deborah Marshall, two sisters who spent many years in search of their family heritage. They wrote a book "Drawer 345" which details that search. Several of us bought a copy which is also available on Amazon. Looking forward to reading my signed copy.

We are in the planning stages of our next Open House. Jim Hanni will be discussing the plans soon.

We also wished Audrey, our server, the best in her
marriage and new life in Arkansas and presented her with a gift card.

Jide Wintoke, Dean, KU School of Business, was our guest speaker this week. Jide is taking part in Leadership Kansas which is very impressive. He gave an extensive review of the School of Business whose mission is to "develop analytical thinkers and creative problem solvers who drive meaningful change as leaders in business and beyond." The school has had 15 consecutive years of enrollment growth. They have a large catalogue of undergraduate programs.

We had a great meeting today. Cindy Henry Lt Governor for division 2 and Governor-designate Lindy Lawson paid us a visit. The Salvation Army of Douglas County, Corps Community Center reps Major Karen Holness and Emma Perez did a program based on The Army in a game of trivia. There were no losers as we learned quite a bit.

We also received a new member application from Carrie Poe who was a program presenter several weeks ago. She is sponsored by Kyle Roggenkamp.

Cindy presented us with a check from the Kansas Kiwanis Foundation for $1,000 from a grant we applied for. We turned that over in the form of a club check to Kyle and the Ballard Community Center for diapers and other items for their pantry.

What. A. Meeting! Today we heard from a basketball icon. Dr. James Naismith paid us a visit. He explained that before basketball he was a bit of a mess as a young man. A Canadian American, he was a physical educator, physician, Christian chaplain, and sports coach. He first developed basketball in Canada but wrote his 13 Rules after moving to the U.S. He passed around a copy of the Rules. He is also the only KU basketball coach with a losing record.

He looks pretty good for a guy 165 years of age.

We also had several guests and Al & Sue Hack brought Gina Gardner for a second visit, Gina did fill out a membership application.

If you don't want to have fun, hear a great speaker, make great friends, then Lawrence Kiwanis is NOT where you want to be.

This week we had the pleasure of hearing from Ruth DeWitt with Explore Lawrence. Ruth described how the Lawrence community embraced the Men's Algerian National World Cup soccer team. After 24 months planning with 363 planning meetings, the Algerian team arrived. They were embraced by the citizens of Lawrence and they embraced back. What a fun, exciting experience. Lawrence was featured in several media stories by international media and by Adam Kinzinger's blog on Face Book. A true feel good story about the community.

Next week Bill Nix will be coming as Dr James Naismith. Thank you, Tom Lundblad, for arranging and sponsoring this special program. This will be a great meeting to invite guests and prospective members.

Our meetings are so much fun! We also manage to learn stuff. This week we heard from Colin Roust, Associate Dean, KU School of Music. He discussed several topics including using music as therapy and the KU Music Camp. Students work with kids in school too.
