Friends of Lawrence Hidden Valley

Friends of Lawrence Hidden Valley Friends of Hidden Valley provides support for Hidden Valley Camp, a semi-primitive, private site est. in 1956 for girls and other youth to enjoy nature.

Friends of Hidden Valley help support the mission of Lawrence Hidden Valley Camp. Hidden Valley was established in 1956 by local Girl Scouts with funds distributed by the estate of the late Alfred Bromelsick. The camp is owned and managed by the locally-based Lawrence Hidden Valley Committee (LHVC) Inc., a non-profit organization composed of the adult Girl Scout membership living in the greater La

wrence, Kansas community. For over 50 years, Hidden Valley has been managed with both youth and wildlife in mind, returning the overgrazed pastures to prairie and woods. Its meandering streams represent the last remnant of the main stem of the Quail Creek watershed that has not been channelized. Most development and maintenance has been accomplished through annual distributions of the Bromelsick estate and the hard work of four generations of volunteers of Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts working with their troops and families, and community members dedicated to providing our local youth with a safe and private natural wildlife area. In 1996, The Friends of Hidden Valley, Inc., organized to ensure a long-term commitment to Hidden Valley. Incorporated in 1999, it is governed by a 12-member Board of Volunteer Directors with membership open to the public. Our mission is to provide support to LHVC in programs, maintenance, and goals that promote and benefit Hidden Valley Camp, now and in the future.

Yesterday, 6/18/2026, around 3:30 pm, just after the Girl Scouts left for the day, a deer was happily munching on the bush honeysuckle. This is a compilation of three videos. Too bad the deer don’t eat enough of the invasive honeysuckle to keep it under control—FHV has a group of people who work toward eradicating it every winter. If you want some good exercise for a good cause, please join them! See the web page of the Friends of Hidden Valley for more information: https://www.friendshv.org/. (posted 6/19/2026)

The bobcat seems unfazed by the Girl Scouts attending Day Camp. This image is from Tuesday, 6/16/2026, at around 11 am. The same camera, at the Westward Ho Southwest site, took images of a bobcat at 8:20 am and at about 1:40 pm. Day Camp starts at 8:45 am and Girl Scouts are released about 3 pm. As for this image, to me it looks like this cat is really large. I think I may put some kind of ruler on the nearby tree, maybe—like a yardstick or something. (posted 6/18/2026)

OK. I give up. What is crawling on the camera lens??!! This is the Quail-Creek-Logjam-Bridge camera on 3/26/2026, around 7:15 pm. (posted 6/16/2026)

It is the second week of Girl Scout Day Camp so there are not many images or videos of animals, only a couple of birds too far away to identify. So, here is a compiled version of three videos of a deer on the Cherokee Lookout trail from 5/13/2026, around 6:51 am. CapCut reduced the resolution so much it is blurry, so I will post one of the videos in the comments. (posted 6/16/2026)

Say, look! I think we have twins again this year! This video was taken by the Wetland camera (we are working on trimming that vegetation away from the camera) yesterday, 6/14/2026, around 5:25 pm. (posted 6/15/2026)

And here is an image of a bobcat walking through Bishop’s Glen, last night, 6/13/2026, around 8:35 pm. (posted 6/14/2026...

Mystery bird on the ground in the grasses around the Wetland Pond yesterday, around 7:20 pm. Look at the vegetation jump near the middle of the view. Can anyone identify it? (posted 6/14/2026)

These two seem to be headed toward Bob Billings Parkway, to cross the road. I hope they are careful. We lost a fawn to a car collision last year, and hope it won’t happen again. This was taken by the trail camera at the Zip Pole this morning, 6/13/2026, around 4:15 am. (posted 6/13/2026)

This was taken by the Quail Creek Log-Jam Bridge camera back on 4/7/2026, around 3:55 am. Sure, the raccoon is obvious, but what is the shadow on the camera on the upper left??!! (Posted 6/12/2026)

Subtle, but there is a deer in this short video from the Zip Pole camera, yesterday, 6/11/2026, around 5 pm. (posted 6/12/2026)
