We're excited to see you all next week! Our program will begin at 3:45pm with remarks from Commissioner Shannon Reid and Program Director Hannah Bolton. Guests are invited to tour this historically preserved home, and then step next door to tour our upcoming renovation project.

This project is so special in so many ways. The house, built in 1896 and designated the Joseph S Boughton House, is the original home of the Founder of the Lawrence Public Library The colors of the interior rooms were inspired by the dedicated bench in honor of the late Sue Reid. This piece was completed by the incredibly talented Nikeyah, a 2025 Van Go student apprentice. The exterior of the home tells the story of family legacy that made this project happen.

We are grateful for the support of the Douglas County, Kansas Government, Family Promise of Lawrence, Douglas County Community Foundation, and the collaborative work we do with our partners to support A Place for Everyone, our community's dedicated plan to end chronic homelessness.

See you soon!

Quite literally the day before McLain’s on KU’s campus was set for demolition, we got a call from our community partners to see if we needed any fancy countertops for our current renovation project for moms and kiddos at Cardinal. We joyously said yes (potentially naively, those things were heavy!), and some of those countertops were finally installed this past weekend. We think they look INCREDIBLE!

We are so thankful to be a part of a community that helps one another out and attempts to reduce construction waste. Thank you to Monte Soukup with KU Endowment and Pat Quaranta and Stacie Salverson-Schroeder with Lawrence Habitat for Humanity - Serving Douglas & Jefferson Counties for thinking of us!

If you are interested, we need your help in finishing these spaces with fridges, window blinds, and other household staples to finish making these spaces a home. Any dollars raised through the end of the year will help us get these 3 apartments live for families in need. You can donate through our website at Cardinalhousingks.org ❤️

THANK YOU Cans for the Community for this amazing gift to support our multitude of housing projects for women in recovery. This organization has been at the forefront of true community service for as long as we can remember. To know these dollars were raised by putting in hard manual labor, organizing volunteers (no small feat in itself!), and a deep commitment to give back makes this gift all the more special.

Thank you to Cans for the Community and Bo Killough for doing the work - you all are an inspiration and we are grateful to be in community with you!

Today Cans for the Community donated $1,000 (with another $1,000 match from Bo) to Cardinal Housing Network, a nonprofit organization that provides safe, supportive housing opportunities to women in recovery.

A few months back, I read a quote that held me captive. "Heartbreak needs a medium to work through. This is something artists have always understood." by . Through this incredible process with Van Go and the joy that was shared during the Benchmark 2025 unveiling, I believe it now more than ever.

This bench was designed, painted, sanded - you name it - in just 8 short weeks by the amazingly talented artist, Jess. Her thoughtfulness and pure talent took my breath away. I could learn a thing or two about her time management skills, as well 🙂 Witnessing Jess capture so many memories that Commissioner Dorsey shared with his son felt like magic.

The bench was made in honor of the late Todd Dorsey - someone who I only had the opportunity to meet once, but someone who has held a special place in my heart ever since. Todd was an amazing athlete, loved nature and just being outdoors. What I learned about Todd after his passing was that he was always Team Underdog and made it a point to include rather than exclude.

His story has always felt familiar to me - because Todd lived life the way my late brother, Sam, did - both gentle souls in a not-so-gentle world. In fact, they were friends in the final few years of their lives. This bench finding its home in the home that was built in honor of Sam's journey - well, it could not get any more poetic than that. Being able to share my stories of Sam with Commissioner Dorsey and his of Todd has been healing for both of us - and knowing we have community in each other to lean on in times of overwhelming grief.

My immense gratitude to Commissioner Dorsey and Bob Tryanski for dedicating this beautiful piece of artwork to our home. I feel so honored to have been included and am thankful for the gift to tell Todd's story for many, many years to come.

Being the recipient of this memorial gift is an honor of a lifetime. Cardinal Housing Network was created to be a safe place for women to rest, heal, and grow as they navigate recovery. It was also created as a testament of love and service in honor of the family I've lost along the way. The saying goes, "When cardinals appear, angels are near."

Through this amazing project with Van Go, I had the privilege to learn more about Commissioner Reid's mother - a magical artist herself, a steady force of bravery, a fellow cat lover, and tenacious as all hell. Commissioner Reid also shared through this project that her mother had a dog she adored named "Blue." As fate often does, my family had already named the home where this bench will live "Lil Blue" in honor of my grandpa, Myron Feuerborn and his electric blue Geo Metro. Alignment is something else.

What I wasn't expecting was how truly special this project would be watching the brilliance of Van Go artist, Nikeyah. Within one conversation, she was able to incorporate all of the things that made Sue Reid so special - the colors, the imagery, the thoughtful details. The talent and care was so evident upon the first review, and it was something I will never forget.

I could not feel more honored for this bench to live on in honor of Sue Reid, and I could not be more grateful to Commissioner Reid for this gift to the women and children that will call "Lil Blue" home. Thank you for letting Cardinal Housing Network be apart of your story - now and for years to come.

Congratulations to our friends at Family Promise of Lawrence and Ninth Street Missionary Baptist Church on this monumental ground breaking! This project is a wonderful example of the power of community partnerships and what can be achieved when we repurpose land and spaces to meet the needs of our people in Douglas County ❤️

Collaboration was the common theme this evening as supporters and community members gathered at the corner of Ninth and Tennessee streets to break ground on the Hope Project affordable housing development.

Within a day of our grand opening on May 28th, Sheriff Armbrister and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office offered one of the greatest gifts our organization could ask for: the gift of transportation! Allowing us the opportunity to meet the needs of our housing program is nothing short of a miracle. THANK YOU for believing in us, supporting our mission, and giving our women the real chance to build a healthy future.

This is community care. We are so grateful.
