Is little Billy all grown up?! He is 1 year and 9 months old now! Remember when he was a little bottle baby who took naps with his blankie in a dog crate. 😘
As a blind goat, he has done very well adjusting and adapting to life here. He still shares a space with his aunts - Gwen and Hope (sheep).

This project will finally get all of our birds out of their temporary spaces and into one organized area—with larger flock spaces, no more flooding, everything we need in one place, and an entirely predator-proof setup.

A peek at one of our little flocks in the current set up. These are 2 boys from the group of 31 we took in from a local classroom chick hatching project a few years ago. They are currently in a 10x10 space. The sanctuary is scattered with these kennels, mostly in clusters but in multiple places. Our aim is to move all the chickens to a central location, organized, and on higher ground. Feeding, watering and cleaning take hours every day. Chicken bedtime is also stressful. Creating our Neighborhood will put an end to all of this. We are also making spaces larger and adding more enrichment. And a storage and compost area within the Chicken Neighborhood will be a game changer.

Walter isn't just the face of our humane alternative to classroom chick hatching, The Hatching Kindness Project because of where he came from. He's the face of it because of WHO he is. ❤️🐓
Walter was one of 31 chicks hatched as a classroom project in a local elementary school but today he's one of the most people-loving roosters at Shy 38. He seeks out attention, enjoys being around people and has a personality that is completely his own. Spend a little time with Walter and it's hard to see him as "just" a chicken.
And that's exactly what we want kids to understand.
Roughly half of chicks hatched will be roosters (sometimes more!), yet there are very few places for those boys to go. Shy 38 is home to 98 rescued roosters—an extraordinarily large number for a sanctuary.
Our new Chicken Neighborhood will give Walter and the rest of our flocks the permanent spaces they deserve while helping us expand The Hatching Kindness Project through tours, education and live classroom webcams.
Walter needed a sanctuary because someone hatched him. Now he can help teach kids why we don't need to keep hatching more. ❤️

We’ve made the decision to cancel this Sunday’s work day and reschedule for a later date.
We’re expecting pretty low attendance, and after a particularly hard week at the sanctuary, we need a little more time to get ready for this next phase of the project. We also don’t have all of the fence panels taken down or purchased yet that we’ll need to complete the work, and we’re running behind in a few other areas.
Rather than have everyone come out before we’re truly ready to make the most of the day, we’re going to regroup, get caught up, and choose a new date.

Hi, friends! We really need to get moving on our Chicken Neighborhood. 🐓❤️

We’ve raised $500 of the $18,809 we need, and we’re incredibly thankful to everyone who has donated so far. Several people have already sponsored a wooden post that will become a permanent part of the Neighborhood.
We still have $18,309 to raise.

The Chicken Neighborhood will be a 200' x 200' area on higher ground with separate, secure spaces for our different flocks. With 98 roosters, (and lots of hens), we have bachelor groups, special-needs flocks, larger mixed flocks and boys who simply cannot live safely with other roosters.

Right now, our chicken areas are temporary and scattered all over the sanctuary. Some are on low ground that become flooded when it rains. It's not a setup that works long-term—for them or for us.
Getting everyone into one organized, permanent area will make a HUGE difference in how we're able to care for this many birds.

And this project is about more than that. The Chicken Neighborhood will also give us new opportunities for class field trips, sanctuary tours, humane education programs and the Hatching Kindness Project, including live webcams for classrooms. (Chicken TV!!)

We want kids to come here, meet these birds, learn their names and personalities, and see firsthand why chickens, particularly roosters—deserve so much better.

We have a lot of money left to raise and not a lot of time to get this done before winter.

UPDATE 👇
Check this out. Keko and his new friend, Boo, both raccoon attack survivors, have graduated from our sun room "hospital". They've got a small space set up for them outside so they can get back to doing things like dust bathing, scratching and pecking, and soaking up some sun.

Neither are back to 100% YET. but Keko 's wry neck is gone, he has normal vision in one eye and partial in the other. His aim - when trying to grab something small (a berry, etc) is still slightly off but I anticipate that improving over time. The part of his comb that was damaged in the attack has died and fallen off. (Which means he won't need surgery to remove it now.)

Boo came to us more recently. Her previous caretakers were treating her on their own for awhile and then she saw our vet and went through a round of antibiotics. She's improved quickly. She did lose one eye. Neither of them could eat on their own so they were tube fed.- Keko for several weeks. Look how well they're doing now!

In case you missed it, Keko and numerous brothers were dumped at Clinton Lake to fend for themselves. Three of the boys died. We were able to capture 6 of them. Keko was attacked by a raccoon just a few feet in front of me in the tall weeds while we were searching for them in the dark.

For anyone with accidental/unwanted roosters: if you are thinking they will be ok alone in the wild. No, they won't. They'll stay right where you left them and they'll get killed by predators. Animal abandonment is also illegal, not to mention extremely cruel.

I'd also like to add, the other 5 are very sweet roosters. They are still living together in a bachelor flock, and getting along very well.

Imagine throwing away a living, feeling animal like garbage. 😡
