The International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) Local 1596 was chartered on January 4, 1966. From that day forward our membership has grown steadily from eight founding fathers to over one hundred men and women. Local 1596 is chartered under the International Association of Firefighters and exclusively represents full-time, paid professional members of the Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical

Department. The history of Local 1596 is a story of how these professionals have made extraordinary accomplishments through organized strength, collective unity, and collaborative teamwork. Today, the members of Local 1596 represent unparalleled professionalism in the fire and emergency medical rescue services. Local 1596 is a strong and proud labor organization solely dedicated to the welfare of its members. The members of Local 1596 are proud to be one of 2,700 local affiliates of the International Association of Firefighters, which has over 267,000 members in the United States and Canada.

Public safety doesn't happen by accident—it takes leaders who make it a priority.

That's why Lawrence Professional Firefighters proudly endorse Patrick Kelly, Gene Dorsey, and Erica Anderson for Douglas County Commission.

When faced with difficult budget decisions, they chose to invest in public safety by expanding ambulance service, reducing emergency response times, and working for a sustainable funding plan for the future of fire and EMS.

Their leadership has made Douglas County safer, but there's more work to do.

On August 4, vote for the candidates who have consistently put community safety first.

Congratulations to our newest members to graduate their paramedic program. These are 18-24 month programs that these members complete while still working full-time at LDCFM. Their dedication to completing the program and expand their knowledge is just another reason why your LDCFM Fire and EMS are committed to providing the highest quality of service for our citizens.

Overnight severe thunderstorms kept LDCFM crews busy, with firefighters responding to approximately 28 weather-related incidents across Douglas County.

Calls included electrical hazards, storm-related service calls, and a structure fire caused by a lightning strike. Thanks to a rapid response, firefighters were able to quickly contain the fire and prevent further damage to the home.

We appreciate the patience of our community during severe weather events and the dedication of our personnel, who staffed additional resources to help meet the increased demand for service.

As we move further into storm season, we encourage residents to stay weather aware and sign up for the Northeast Kansas Regional Notification System to receive important emergency and weather alerts.

Hey LKPD, thanks for securing the scene for us 😉 But seriously, thank you for the swift response and we are glad no one was seriously injured in the incident.

A man broke into Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical Station #5 overnight and pulled the fire alarm.

When officers arrived about 1:30 in the morning, firefighters led them to the suspect who was in the kitchen area with blood on his hands.

He admitted he broke a window in the truck bay to get into the station at 19th and Stewart.

The man was arrested without incident and taken to the Douglas County Correctional Facility. He told officers he was seeing people while looking at a blank wall.

No firefighters were injured during the break-in.

We’re proud to recognize 8 members of the Lawrence Professional Firefighters who recently represented our department at the IAFF Strive for Excellence Summit.

Throughout the event, they took part in leadership development, health and safety education, and hands-on training designed to strengthen skills both on and off the fireground.

A sincere thank you to the International Association of Fire Fighters the IAFF 2nd District, and the Kansas State Council of Firefighters for the outstanding learning opportunities, networking, and hospitality throughout the summit!
