However, the 10AM Wildflower Walk with Kelly Kindscher will still take place unless there is lightning in the area. Please expect muddy conditions, light rain, and a beautiful prairie. See you at 10:00!

We had such a lovely morning on Saturday exploring the beautiful woodland and prairie of the Earles conservation easement, and making nature-inspired art with supplies and guidance provided by !

Thank you to Erika Earles, Kathy Bourgeois, Jeanette Blackmar, and Mindy Pendreigh, for sharing sweet and moving stories about Ralph and Roma Earles, the landowners who chose to permanently protect this incredible place.

There are still a few spots left for Exploring Creativity at the Earles Woodlands on May 2nd!

Join the Lumberyard Arts Center and the Kansas Land Trust as we step into the magic of spring and engage with the land through exploration, creation, discovery, and learning at the protected Earles property in Baldwin City, KS.

Artists Kathy Bourgeois and Mindy Pendreigh, friends of the late Roma and Ralph Earles, will share stories about how this special place inspires creative exploration and lead participants in an art activity suitable for all ages and levels.

Participants will be invited to share their creations from the land in an exhibit at the Lumberyard Arts Center (fall 2026).

This is a free event but space is limited! Register at KLT.org/events and make sure to sign up for our newsletter at KLT.org/newsletter to stay informed of upcoming opportunities to connect out on the land.

On this Earth Day, we’re celebrating one of Kansas’ rarest prairie plants: Mead’s milkweed (Asclepias meadii), which grows at Akin Prairie, a conservation easement protected by Kansas Land Trust.

Once widespread across the tallgrass prairie, this federally threatened species now survives only in small pockets of remnant habitat. Its presence is a reminder of both what has been lost, and what is still worth protecting.

Tallgrass prairies are among the most endangered ecosystems in the world, yet they are incredibly rich in life, supporting pollinators, wildlife, healthy soil, and clean water.

Because most land in Kansas is privately owned, protecting these landscapes depends on voluntary action. Conservation easements make it possible to safeguard prairies like Akin Prairie, keeping them intact and thriving for generations to come.

This Earth Day, we’re grateful for the landowners who choose to protect land, and for the native landscapes that continue to sustain us all.

In Kansas, most land isn’t public—it’s cared for by the people who know it best.

When a landowner chooses to permanently protect their land with KLT, they’re making a lasting commitment to healthy land, clean water, and abundant wildlife for future generations.

It’s a decision that ensures the places we love don’t disappear over time.

To date, KLT has been able to protect 30,576 acres of prairie, 3,626 acres of farmland, 3,321 acres of woodland, and 173 miles of stream banks.

We are deeply grateful to the landowners who make this commitment to conservation across Kansas.
