Green Wish Lawrence

Green Wish Lawrence Lawrence and the surrounding communities have embraced Green Wish as an effective way to raise awareness of local green projects and involve the community.

Green Wish Lawrence is the first Green Wish chapter planted outside of Los Angeles. It launched in June 2012, and is based in Lawrence, Kan. With a generous grant from a local financial planning firm, McDaniel Knutson Financial Partners, Green Wish Kansas held a city-wide launch event with guest speaker Raphael Sbarge, attracting over 100 attendees to kick off the start of the chapter. The organiz

ation began successfully fundraising for five non-profits based in Northeast Kansas in August 2012. In February 2013, the first donation checks were mailed to the beneficiary charities the chapter supports. Lawrence and the surrounding communities have embraced Green Wish as an effective way to raise awareness of local green projects and involve the community in giving back.

Ecology Must Be the Heart of Theology
Science and religion are not enemies; indeed they must work together if humanity is to survive the 21st century. Given our impact on Earth’s climate, the seas and other species, humanity is facing “the Great Reckoning” that can also be “the Great Homecoming,” as our prodigal species comes home to reality.

This presentation focuses on points of agreement held in common by tens of millions of religious and non-religious people across the globe. It will inspire and encourage you in the face of changing climate and other environmental and societal challenges.

Sustainability Action Network seeks to facilitate discourse that leads to Action towards an ecologically sustainable Earth. Michael Dowd brings a unique and compelling perspective into issues of faith, science and our future.

Time Sensative Action Alert:

THE "TYSON BILL" - KANSAS SENATE BILL 405, TO BE VOTED ON THIS WEEK

On 5 September 2017, homeboy Sam Brownback announced that a Tyson industrial chicken slaughterhouse would grace 300 acres south of Tonganoxie KS, and process 1.25 million birds per week. There would also have been about 50 chick breeding operations throughout a 50 mile radius, where up to 150,000 chicks would be hatched and raised in each of the confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs).

Sam I am Not had a rude awakening when Tonganoxians by the thousands refused what they called "slave wages" for 1600 jobs. The citizenry pressured their Leavenworth County Commission to withdraw the proffered $500 million industrial revenue bonds, and without that corporate welfare, Tyson left town.

But Tyson never left the state, first trying their luck in Sedgwick County (Wichita), who also gave them the boot, and then moved on to Cloud County, where a corporate friendly economic "development" climate exists. To grease the skids, a corporatist contingent in the Kansas Legislature is trying to head off local opposition by streamlining the regulations for chicken factories in a new Senate Bill 405 - the Tyson Bill. The current rule says any site with over 99,999 chickens must be 4000 feet from the neighbors.
The new rule would allow 332,660 chickens to be raised within 1,320 feet instead of 4,000 feet from occupied buildings, such as homes, churches, schools and medical facilities. On top of which, SB 405 would establish those setback distances as measured to occupied buildings, not to property lines. Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "farming fence row to fence row". Finally, these State regulations would supersede local zoning requirements, and not allow counties to set stricter rules than the State regs. Senate Bill 405 is to be voted upon by the full Senate this coming Tuesday or Wednesday - details at Big Poultry Senate Bill Vote.

There are a couple alternate Senate Bills sponsored by Senator Tom Holland. These are Senate Bill 364 - SB 364 - and Senate Bill 365 - SB 365. Both bills would essentially shift power to the county level in three ways. First of all, no chicken factory could be located in any county unless a local election allows it. Second, County Commissions would have authority whether to approve or deny a chicken factory application. And third, the citizens could file a petition for a vote if they disagree with the decision of the County Commission. Neither of these bills will go anywhere if Senate Bill 405 passes.

The Kansas Sierra Club is asking concerned citizens to ask their Senator to vote NO on SB 405. The action alert is here - Legislative Alert: Tell Your Senator NO Tyson Bill, and you can click here to find your Senator.
