📣 SAVE THE DATE! The second annual Kaw Valley Field Day is coming to Shirk’s Farm on October 10th!

Join us for this FREE all ages celebration bringing together families, farmers, and friends to enjoy local food, music, hayrack rides, a pumpkin patch, educators, storytellers, and other fall activities against the backdrop of the beautiful Kaw River Valley.

🚨 Important Update 🚨

The Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission has deferred the vote to annex prime farmland in Grant Township. This was previously on the agenda for next week's June 24th meeting, but will now be moved to a later, yet-to-be-determined date.

Keep your eyes on our page for updates – we will post as we learn more.

Please pass the word about this important upcoming information session for our community. The development of data centers in Douglas County represents a potential threat to our goal of protecting our important Kaw Valley farmland from industrial development. Please come, listen, and learn!

Interested in keeping data centers out of the Lawrence community? Join us for a meeting on at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 23 at the Lawrence Public Library to discuss how we can take action together!

At the meeting, we‘ll talk about:
•What’s the problem with data centers?
•Why are data center developers interested in Lawrence?
•What opposition is happening right now, and how can you get involved?

Thank you everyone who showed up to our Concerned Citizen Meeting and to the Country Commission Meeting. We’ve learned a lot in a short time, and appreciate the community engagement.

Some key takeaways from the Commission Meeting:

As of right now the county has not received any application for this kind of development. The County Commissioners are interested in splitting the battery storage and data center conversations. There was skepticism about the counties infrastructure being able to support the building and operation of a data center. They plan on reconvening once the separate diagnostic review is received in 90 to 120 days. It’s unclear whether they move forward with an additional study session, or a meeting that is open to public input.

What are our next steps?

We will continue to post updates as we learn more. In the meantime we will begin planning educational meetings about city and county government processes. What can you do? Stay informed! Lawrence Journal World has been doing excellent reporting on data center development in our county.

Public attendance is welcome—and needed— at study sessions, but the public will not be allowed to ask questions or speak. We’ll be there to listen and learn—and show the commissioners we’re interested.

New development codes recently adopted by the City of Lawrence, and talk of new county regulations likely allowing data centers means it’s time for concerned citizens to step up to the plate, listen and learn a lot in a hurry, and be ready to show up for the data center conversation before it’s too late.
