When you bring up the names Jeff and Jason Capel, it usually isn’t too long until some of the best college basketball moments from the last several decades come up.
Jeff was the gritty and quick four year floor general at Duke in the mid 90s. He followed in his father’s footsteps to become a great coach and develop some of the NBA’s top talent with stops at Duke, Oklahoma, and Pitt. Jason is still one of the few players to start all four years at North Carolina, leading his UNC team to the 2000 Final Four. He’s also on his brother’s coaching staff at Pitt. If you’re looking for good and competitive college basketball coached by guys who know the game, check your listings for the next time Pitt plays.
Since losing their dad, Coach Jeff Capel II, to ALS in 2017, the Capels have also become a force in the ALS community, using their platform to build awareness and support for ALS advocacy and research. Tomorrow, the Capels lead their Pitt Panthers against Boston College in our last Hoops4ALS game of the season (6pm EST, ACC Network). Jeff is a founding member of Hoops4ALS, and without his willingness to lift up the group, none of what we’ve been able to do over the last two years would have been possible.
The Capels are basketball superstars who understand the impact of using the platform they’ve earned to help those dealing with ALS. Many thanks to Jeff and Jason for putting Hoops4ALS on the biggest stages in college basketball.
