Indigenous Stewardship Club

Indigenous Stewardship Club We are a student organization at the University of Kansas open to all Indigenous students and allies.

The Indigenous Stewardship Club (ISC) provides volunteering and networking opportunities for Indigenous students and non-Indigenous student allies to (re)learn land stewardship practices, emphasizing traditional ecological knowledge (TEK). The desired outcome is for all students to cultivate a renewed relationship with Mother Earth, strengthened friendships with one another, and, for Indigenous students, a greater sense of community and Tribal connection.

Our first Spooner workday and community walk was a success! We finally have some good medicines in there! Wanìshi to everyone who joined us after the Climate Change & Children’s Health Symposium. Special thanks to Lori for the bologna sandwiches, chips, and drinks. And thanks to those who aren’t pictured- sorry we didn’t think to get a group photo before y’all had to head out! We’ll get ya in there next time. ❤️

Lots of exciting events going on next Spring at The University of Kansas! The KU Indigenous Studies program and our new Office of Sovereign Partnerships and Indigenous Initiatives are planning to host a few new events: 1) A professional development summit for teachers and teachers in-training (in partnership with Kansas State Department of Education); 2) A gathering of tribes in the region to find synergies with content area experts and discuss strategic directions related to building capacity and infrastructures for improving data sovereignty (and inter-agency/gov't relations); 3) A LandBack leadership summit focused on strategy, skills, and action so we might consider how to build professional capacity in these areas, and of course, the KU FNSA Powwow & Indigenous Cultures Festival!!

We're looking forward to seeing how this all evolves as we bring the details together! Stay tuned.

Join us next Thursday for some work at Spooner Hall and a community walk to Prairie Acre afterward!
