Did you know...Sunnyside School is on the National Register of Historic Places. The school was built in 1879 and patterned after a design by early Kansas architects John Haskell and Louis M.H. Wood.

Established in 1866 Sunny Side School has had thousands of students and community members pass through its doors. In it's early years it served not only as the area's school but also as a place of worship. A traveling pastor would come to Sunny Side every other week, and Sunday School classes were taught each Sunday. Since those early days, through consolidations, feasts, famines, floods, depressions and high times the school has been a gathering place for the community. It currently serves as the meeting location for the Sunny Valley EHU (Extension Homemaker Units are now known as FCE, Family & Consumer Education, old habits are hard to break!), the Township polling location and is host to the annual Rural Water District meeting.

As with many old buildings Sunny Side is in need of new paint and a few repairs to the exterior. The Sunny Valley EHU members, as well as other community members, believe very strongly in preserving this historic site for generations to come. A campaign will soon be launched to raise the funds needed for maintenance work and paint.

Welcome to the Sunny Valley EHU (now known as Family & Consumer Education Units) page. For over fifty years Sunny Valley EHU has served the southern Jefferson County, Kansas area for fellowship, education and community support. The unit meets monthly at the historic Sunny Side School. Established in 1866, Sunny Side served not only as a place of education but also as a place of worship for the community in the early 1900's. The current EHU has a small number of active members who believe in the preservation of the Sunny Side School. A campaign will soon begin to raise funds to repair the exterior of the building and to freshen up the paint. The building currently hosts Unit meetings, serves as the Township voting site and hosts the annual Rural Water District meeting. Check back often to learn more about the unit, the school and events.
