At the Lawrence Farmers Market, one of our main missions is to improve access to local, healthy affordable food for everyone in our community - but what does that exactly mean for our market, our vendors, and the community we serve?
Our plan to improve access includes a variety of tactics: affordability, accessibility, education, and visibility.
Through our Token Programs we work to keep local food affordable and accessible to everyone, regardless of their economic status. We partner with Double Up Heartland to double SNAP users' money and we provide our own token program to triple their money. That means we give SNAP users $75 to spend at the farmers market for every $25 they swipe from their card. This is a win-win for local farmers and local community members and keeps everyone fed.
Know someone who doesn't qualify for SNAP and is looking to still eat local foods? Throughout the farmers market season (April-November), our Vendors donate over 8,000 pounds in local food to Just Food, making freshly picked local fruits and vegetables accessible to everyone - they even have a specific farmers market cooler available to shop from!
Our Loyalty Card Program gives everyone coming through the farmers market an equal chance to win a bundle of local food every single month! Grab a card, get it stamped five times, and enter to win our monthly drawing full of seasonal produce, meats, baked goods, and specialty items, all wrapped up in a Lawrence Farmers Market tote bag!
Our Kid Activity Program helps to educate the next generation of locavores to know what local foods taste like, who grows them, and how they grow. Each week kids learn about a new seasonal food and stay active while their parents are connecting with Vendors about how their products are grown and made.
Our long-term goal to find a permanent location will increase the visibility of our local farmers within our community. We know people forget week after week and there is only so much marketing we can do to remind everyone of the benefits of eating seasonally. Make a plan, bring a friend, and enjoy the community vibe of our farmers market. Shop locally with us each Saturday all the way through November 21st.
Our Silent Auction launches Thursday, September 10th, with all proceeds benefiting the nonprofit Lawrence Farmers Market to keep Vendor fees down and us getting food directly from farmers to YOU!
