Graduate student researchers at the University of Kansas Medical Center are leading pivotal studies related to the treatment of Alzheimer’s, cancer, infectious diseases and more.

Their work is funded, in part, by the annual Gregg Research Award. Every $1,000 check is hand-delivered to the winner on campus, along with a box of doughnuts.

“There can be some incredibly dark days throughout graduate training,” says Scott Koppel, Ph.D., M.D. and 2016 Gregg award recipient. “It helps immensely to know there are people like the Greggs who believe in young students and show them they are supported — especially if it’s done in such a delicious way.”

Some of the most important parts of college happen outside the classroom.

For Kansas Crew members, time on the water offers a different kind of balance: physical activity, fresh air, friendship and space to reset from the demands of student life.

But crew offers something else, too. Because students help build and run the club themselves, they’re also learning how to recruit, fundraise, lead, solve problems and turn an idea into something that lasts. It’s part sport, part community and even part entrepreneurship.

That’s the experience alumnus Garry Tanner found at KU. Now, his generosity is helping more Jayhawks find their people, their balance and their own place in the boat.

Creating cellular therapies in-house drastically reduces wait times for patients who need them most.
