Maria Martin’s beautiful collages and paintings will be on display along with over 20 other artists' artwork at Art Emergency for the Lawrence Art Guild’s Art Spaces - Studio Tours event this weekend (May 2nd and 3rd).

Maria - “As an artist, the unpredictability and sense of discovery is very exciting, and one of the reasons why I do what I do,” Martin said. “My ultimate goal is to create a work that engages the viewer and takes them on their journey.”
Martin is partial to mixed media art, acrylic paintings and collages. The thoughtful layering of different materials makes her work endlessly explorable and dynamic. Look long enough at her pieces and you may catch her use of handmade paper, or the distinct textures derived from acrylic paint on malleable mediums.
“With a collage painting, the things that inspire me begin to form the backgrounds within my windows, and the windows tell the story,” Martin said. “I allow my intuition to guide me as I build up the layers and the painting.”

Robbin Loomas
Artist Statement

“Is that a photograph or a painting?”

That is the first thing I hear when people view my art. The answer is “Yes”. My work is a blending of photography, painting and technology. I paint with a computer. Digital painting is an emerging art form where traditional painting techniques and styles are applied using a computer as a tube of paint and a digital tablet and stylus for a paint brush. Each brush stroke is applied individually, by hand. Often I combine “real” paint with “virtual” paint to the finished canvas.

Unusual photography processes have always fascinated me. I consider the camera my sketchbook. When I look through the lens I see the beginning of a work of art. It is the bones on which to build. Each image calls for it’s own special treatment. There is no one workflow I follow. Some images remain simply enhanced photographs with little more done to them than would be done in the darkroom. Other images are transformed into something entirely new. I believe our role as artists is not to simply capture what we see, but to translate and interpret what we feel.”

Suzanne Ashely came from a family of watercolor artists, but fabric has always been her love. She started designing and making her own clothing in junior high. She became a sewist and worked in alterations until her retirement in 2019.
“I fell in love with Digital Embroidery because it is quite challenging. It is not your grandmother’s embroidery. It is something new that tests my skill every time I sit in front of my embroidery machine. I recently began combining appliqué to my pieces”
Suzanne will be one of over 20 artists at Art Emergency during the Art Spaces - Studio Tours event. To see a map of all of the artists’ locations and to see examples of their work click on the link.

Janet‑Lynn Zuk is a Lawrence‑based acrylic painter. Her work blends bold color, strong linear elements, and layered washes to create paintings full of energy, contrast, and emotion.

Drawing inspiration from the Flint Hills, sunsets, expansive skies, and everyday moments, she creates both landscape and figurative work that reflects the beauty she sees in the world around her. Her paintings are meant to feel joyful, inviting, and expressive, encouraging viewers to connect with both the artwork and each other.

She continues to explore several long‑term series including reading, ballerinas, and sunsets, while remaining endlessly inspired by the shifting colors of the Kansas sky.

Janet-Lynn will be showing her artwork during the Lawrence Art Guild’s Art Spaces - Studio Tours event May 2nd the 3rd. To see a map of all of the artists’ locations and to see examples of their work click on the link.
