IBCLCs: Essential Partners in Maternal & Infant Health

A new 2026 position update highlights the critical role of International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) in improving breastfeeding outcomes, advancing health equity, reducing healthcare costs, and supporting families through complex feeding challenges. Research shows that families who receive care from an IBCLC are more likely to achieve their breastfeeding goals, report greater confidence and satisfaction, and experience better health outcomes. IBCLCs serve as clinical experts, educators, advocates, researchers, and policy leaders, helping shape breastfeeding-friendly healthcare systems and expanding access to evidence-based lactation care in hospitals, communities, and virtual settings.

As breastfeeding support continues to be recognized as a public health priority, this growing body of evidence reinforces that investing in IBCLC services is not a luxury—it’s a necessity for improving maternal and child health. https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/08903344261434475
