Something to Celebrate!
20 years ago today, Kansas opted out of the federal physician supervision requirement for Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs). In her March 31, 2003, letter to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, then-Gov. Kathleen Sebelius informed CMS that electing a state exemption from supervision was “in the best interests of Kansas citizens, rural communities and hospitals. Our state relies heavily on CRNAs; the majority of Kansas hospitals have only CRNA staff to provide surgical, obstetrical, and trauma stabilizing services.” Some 16.2 million anesthetics later, KANA wants to thank former Gov. Sebelius; our state leaders over the last 20 years; healthcare facility administrators; our physician, nurse, and other healthcare colleagues; and the patients we serve for putting your trust in the 900+ CRNAs across Kansas.
We look forward to ensuring access to safe, cost-effective anesthesia care for all Kansans for the next 20 years and beyond!
