📢 Community Advisory: West Nile Virus Detected in Lowell Mosquitoes; Preventative Spraying Scheduled for Tonight, Wednesday, September 2

The Massachusetts Dept of Public Health has confirmed that West Nile Virus (WNV) has been detected in mosquitoes collected in Lowell.

As a preventative measure, the City has requested street-level mosquito spraying in the area where the mosquito was identified. Spraying is scheduled for tonight, Wednesday, September 2, from 8:30 - 11:00PM.

📍 Spray Area (see map): Autumn St, Ayer Ave, Blossom Ct, Blossom St, Boston Rd, Canada St, Cottage Pl, Court St, Cunningham St, Eaton St, Fruit St, Lincoln St, London St, Main St, Manchester St, Maple St, Marriner St, Marshall Rd, Massasoit St, Mechanics St, Montreal St, New Way, Penn Ave, Plain St, Poplar St, Quebec St, Spencer St, Tanner St, Waldo St, W. London St, W. Manchester St

Residents in the spray area should:
• Close street-facing windows and keep pets indoors between sunset and midnight, if possible
• Remain indoors during spraying and for 15-20 minutes afterward
• Turn off "outside air" controls on older window-unit air conditioners
• Wash garden vegetables before eating them

There is no need for special precautions the day after spraying, as any residue will have evaporated.

Residents can also help reduce their risk of WNV by using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants when outdoors, avoiding peak mosquito activity from dusk to dawn, and removing standing water around their homes.

🚨 ÚLTIMA HORA | CUBANOS DEPORTADOS A ÁFRICA

Varios inmigrantes cubanos que vivían en Florida aseguran que fueron deportados por ICE a la República Centroafricana, un país con el que no tenían vínculos, y que algunos no conocieron su destino hasta varias horas después de que el avión despegara.

Uno de ellos, Yasmany Moreno de Armas, de 31 años, contó que pensaba que simplemente estaba siendo trasladado entre centros de detención. Según su testimonio, fue durante el vuelo cuando descubrió que el destino era África.

Reportes indican que cuatro cubanos —Omar Rodríguez, Arístides Fernández García, Yasmany Moreno de Armas y Daniel Lázaro Fuente— permanecían en Bangui sin documentos y buscando ayuda para regresar.

El caso forma parte de una política de deportaciones a terceros países, en la que Estados Unidos envía a algunos deportados a un país distinto al de su nacionalidad.

⚠️ Importante: las declaraciones sobre estar “sin pasaportes” y no tener una vía para regresar corresponden a los propios deportados y han sido reportadas por medios; no puedo confirmar que esa situación sea idéntica para todas las personas deportadas.

Investigation Leads to Fi****ms Arrest

On August 31st, officers assigned to the Neighborhood Response Unit (NRU) responded to a call for service involving shots fired in the Acre neighborhood. After conducting a thorough investigation, officers located the suspects and seized the fi****ms pictured below. The suspects, an 18-year-old male and a 20-year-old male, were arrested and received the following charges: Carrying a Firearm without a License, Carrying a Loaded Firearm, and Possession of Ammunition. The 18-year-old male was also charged with Possession of a Loaded Machine Gun and the 20-year-old male was charged with Possession of a Large Capacity Feeding Device.
