Baker University Wetlands & Discovery Center Visit the Baker University Wetlands and Discovery Center!

Outside, explore 11 miles of hiking and biking trails before coming in to the Discovery Center to learn about our history, the values of wetlands, and meet some native Animal Ambassadors. The Baker University Wetlands work takes place on ancestral land belonging to the original stewards of these lands and watersheds: the Kaw Nation, the Osage Nation, the Kickapoo Tribe, as well as those Tribal communities represented by Haskell Indian National University. We acknowledge the living history and contributions of the indigenous communities who inhabited this land prior to the establishment of the Baker University Wetlands.

Last week, Baker University Wetlands staff joined partners from the Kansas Biological Survey and Haskell Indian Nations University, including K-INBRE intern, Shelby Shatto, to survey freshwater mussels at two sites along the Wakarusa River adjacent to Baker University Wetlands and Clinton Lake Outlet Park.

This important conservation work was made possible through funding from the Douglas County Natural & Cultural Heritage Grant Program and Baker University. Monitoring mussel populations provides valuable insights into the health of local waterways can help inform future conservation efforts in Douglas County. Healthy mussel populations are a sign of healthy rivers--we're grateful to our partners for helping protect these vital ecosystems!

Celebrate the wonder of migration with us this season! 🦅

Join us for Migratory Bird Day, hosted by Baker University Wetlands and Lawrence Birding Alliance, as we highlight the incredible journeys of birds that travel thousands of miles each year. It’s a great opportunity to get outside, learn about local and migratory species, and appreciate the vital role they play in our ecosystems. Whether you’re an avid birder or just looking for a fun, educational outing, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

A special FYI-🦋 World Migratory Bird Day is happening the same day as Monarch Watch's Open House event (2021 Constant Ave, Lawrence KS from 8 am - 2 pm) please visit us there too! If you have time, we encourage you to visit both and experience migration from two unique perspectives—birds and butterflies!

Make a day of it and celebrate migrations all around us!
