LJW Guild We, the journalists at the Lawrence Journal-World, are forming a union, the Lawrence Journalism Work

05/01/2022

Happy International Workers' Day, everyone! As the LJW Guild continues to work on its first contract for the hard-working reporters and copy editors at the Journal-World, we will be taking the next several days to put out statements from community members who recognize the important role unions play in the workplace. Stay tuned.

One of the major reasons our members chose to form a union was health care. Many people will know why that is the case, as health care has become a significant issue for just about everyone in the United States.

Health care can be expensive for our members, especially for those who wish to get coverage for themselves and their families. Despite this, our coming together as a union has provided an opportunity to change that reality.

Through the United Furniture Workers of America, a health care plan has been offered to our union that would cut our members’ monthly costs significantly. For instance, the total cost for the most expensive option the Furniture Workers’ plan offers our union would be about 20 percent cheaper than the total cost for the cheapest option provided by our current plan.

This would not only be a huge savings for our members but also possibly for Lawrence Journal-World. Another added bonus from the plan is that all of the employees of the Journal-World could participate in this plan. That means the managers who we are bargaining with and our coworkers in other units would be able to benefit from the more cost-affordable plan.

For the Journal-World to provide reliable news to the readers of Douglas County, our members need to be reliably healthy to do their jobs. We ask for the people of Douglas County to continue supporting us — whether that’s subscribing to the newspaper to support our work or sending words of encouragement to our members — as we fight for a fair contract that includes a better health care plan for everyone.

Hello Lawrence!

Today we return to the bargaining table for the fifth time to continue negotiating a fair contract for our members. Unfortunately, the process has been slower than we had hoped, and we have received questions from the community about the process.

While we continue to advocate for better wages, benefits and atmosphere at the paper, we are also bringing in a community advocate, Melissa Stiehler, to sit in on our bargaining sessions to see how the process is going.

Melissa is a Lawrence resident and a civil and workers’ rights activist. Currently, she is the Advocacy Director of Kansas-based Voting Rights Organization, Loud Light. She formerly worked for the ACLU of Kansas, where she was Senior Organizer for their Voting Rights Campaign and was the first elected union steward who helped to successfully unionize their workplace.

We look forward to continuing the bargaining process and improving our newsroom for all of our members. Thank you for your ongoing support.

We are happy to report that after our second week of bargaining, our union and LJW management today tentatively agreed to two articles for our possible contract.

We still have a long way (and harder conversations) to go before we are done. But we are excited to see progress.

The last few days have been difficult for the members of our union, as we have lost another reporter from our group.

We are now down to three full-time news reporters, and it appears there is not a plan to add more in the near future.

As you may have read elsewhere, there are several issues we hope to address through bargaining with management, which will begin soon. We care deeply about this paper and this community, and we believe securing a fair contract and improved newsroom environment will allow us to continue to report on this community to the best of our abilities.

We respectfully ask that the Douglas County community continues to support our union and continues to subscribe to and read the Journal-World as we work toward that goal.

An update:
In three weeks, we believe the LJW Guild will finally be recognized as a union.

Our ballots have been mailed to us, and they’ll be counted on Dec. 28. We are looking forward to ringing in the new year with a voice at the bargaining table.

We will be able to advocate for ourselves, our community and the future of journalism in Lawrence and Douglas County. It’s taken some time, but we’re still committed to our goal.

Thank you to our new allies — both individuals and groups — who have pledged to stand with us. We appreciate the overwhelming support we’ve received thus far, and we’re thrilled to have such strong community backing going forward.

In solidarity,

— The LJW Guild 🌻
