We want to thank everyone who joined us in celebrating Pastor Alex's installation. It was a joy to have Bishop Donna join us!

We are reminded that Gabriel arrived to young Mary giving her earth shaking news, calling her to something paralyzingly big. He offered her assurances of God's presence and provision and she rightfully was still afraid. Then he told her of Elizabeth. He let Mary know that she would not be handling this calling alone, but that she would have a partner, someone who understood and could relate.

We give thanks for all those who partner with us in the ministry of Westwood House as we respond to God much like Mary did, "Let's do this!"

This morning Pastor Alex and our team of interns lead 3 worship services at First Church Lawrence. Interns read scripture, offered prayer and preached the message.
It is wonderful to share the ministry of Westwood House with the larger Lawrence community. We are thankful for the support of First Church, and others like it. Without them we could not serve the KU community.

Each Wednesday as we worship we pass around a notebook where students can write down the prayer requests that they would like to lift up.
Each week the majority of students have something to write down. We even have students who will come in and write in the notebook during the week when they know that they will miss worship.

After it’s been passed all the way around, one student reads all of these aloud in prayer and then we finish together with the Lord’s prayer. It is one of the most powerful parts of worship for me.

Each one of these written prayers is a glimpse into the life and heart of one of our amazing students. Would you join with me this week and lifting up to God their prayers?

Our pantry got a restock this week. Thanks to generous donors we were able to make some important winter purchases: chapstick, lotion, Kleenex, as well as all our usual foods.

You can help us keep the pantry stocked with financial donations or physical items for the pantry! Hearty soups are a particularity popular need this time of year.

You can drop items off at the house during any of our open hours or donate here: https://fumclawrence.org/wesleyku/

I woke up this morning absolutely exhausted after kicking off the semester last night with dinner and worship. But the good kind of exhausted.

The house was filled with people, voices, laughter and joy. Shouts of exclamation rang out as students greeted one another after 6 weeks apart. We celebrated with students who landed jobs or break, commiserate over tough football loss, held space for doubt and uncertainty in the face of a new semester, and jumped right back into life together.

John Wesley recalls his moment of conversion by saying his heart was “strangely warmed.” I cannot say I ever fully understood what he meant until last night. I stood amongst this students who have become my people and marveled at how full my heart was, how big my smile was, how settled my soul was.

I am so excited to see what the Lord has in store for Westwood House this semester as we continue to love, and welcome, just as God does: everyone, no exceptions.

With Love,
Pastor Alex
