Another sad day in the ongoing struggle to preserve and promote true American history.

The most excellent 14th Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, Dr. Lonnie G. Bunch, III, announced plans to retire at year's end.

Nevertheless he is quoted by the New York Times saying, “. . .I will stand against wind and tide to prevent history from being erased, softened and made palatable. That’s wrong.”

He deserves laurels laurels for his commitment to defending intellectual independence, scholarship and integrity. And for building so much including the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

In the face of escalating White House attacks about how museums present American history, Lonnie G. Bunch III has announced his decision to depart.
