We are so excited to welcome back Mr. Bill Sheridan as a speaker for our 2026 Town Hall event.

Bill has been a freelance writer for 40+ years with articles published in magazines and newspapers nationwide. In addition, he's been a radio personality, high school English/Speech teacher, and trainer for two Fortune 500 companies. He has also been occasionally mistaken for Brad Pitt in the past, and potentially in the future to boot.

He is the author of "Depot Street Memories -The Lawler Stories", a memoir based on his life growing up in a small Iowa town in the 1950s.

We are excited to have Bill back this year and look forward to his stories and memories!

June is right around the corner, and we are happy to start sharing our list of speakers for the year's Lawler Historical Society Town Hall. Our first guest for 2026 will be Mr. Dean Fisher

Dean Fisher was born in 1940 to Clarence and Mary Fisher. He grew up four miles north of Lawler, and remains on the family farm 85 years later. As a child, Dean attended Utica school #8. Two of his one-room school teachers were Madonna Kacher and Mabel Croell Banwell.

Dean married Ellen Erland in 1963, and they are the parents of three children. He is a lifelong farmer and was a board member of the local REC for 31 years. He will share many stories of growing up in rural Lawler.

We cannot wait to hear all of the stories that Dean will be sharing on June 21st!

Home of the Free, Because of the Brave

On this Memorial Day we honor the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Without them, we would not be able to have yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

Be sure to stop by and take a peak at our great display at the Lawler Public Library. You should be able to spot a few familiar faces in the window!

We are so excited to finally share what will be happening at our Open House next month! In 2024 we hosted Turkey Valley's wrestling champions, and in 2025 we welcomed with 1985 Turkey Valley State Baseball Championship Team.

This year, The Lawler Historical Society is proud to honor and celebrate the 1982 Turkey Valley State Softball Championship Team. They will be riding in the Lawler Irish Festival parade on Saturday, June 20th, and then joining us at The Starlite Ballroom at 2 PM that afternoon to discuss their memories of their championship team.

We hope to see you there!

Thank you to Helen Pinter for this great cabinet card donation. This wedding photo is from 1905 and features John Novotny and Nellie Kurash. The article is a nice little write up for their 60th wedding anniversary!

Once we scan it, we will add it to our digital collection, which can be found here: https://sites.google.com/.../cabinet-cards-j-p-ekildsen

We recently received a fantastic set of J.P. Eskildsen scans from Lori (Zipse) Sheehy. Mr. Eskildsen ran a photography studio here in Lawler, and we are trying to recover as many of his cabinet cards as possible.

These images were sent with the following message, "They came from an old photo album belonging to my husband's grandmother, Marie (Anderson) Haugen from the Saude area. We are not able to identify any of the people pictured in these cards."

If anyone is able to identify any of the people in these two cabinet cards, we would be so very grateful!

The more things change, the more they stay the same. The 'Lawler Hi-Spy' had a great write up of their 1948 Senior Prom, and many of the staples of modern proms were also around eighty years ago!

The band they saw, the Bennett-Gretten Orchestra, seems to have been a territory band here in the Midwest. I had never heard of Electric Park, but thankfully UNI has a great historical writeup on it: https://historyofblackhawkcounty.uni.edu/cultrecreation/electric%20park/introduction.htm
