Day 1 & 2 of NC 4-H Congress 2026 are officially in the books, and Scotland County 4-H is making the most of every moment! 💚🍀

Our delegates jumped right in by participating in engaging fun shops led by Leading to Change*, where they strengthened their leadership skills, challenged their thinking, competed in trivia, acted out news stories as anchors, and learned how to create positive change in their communities.

NC 4-Hers stepped onto the stage to compete in State Presentations and Public Speaking, representing North Carolina 4-H with confidence, courage, and poise. No matter the outcome, we are incredibly proud of their hard work and dedication!

The fun didn't stop there. The teens danced the night away at the Silent Disco, laughed until their cheeks hurt, met new friends from across North Carolina, and created memories they'll never forget. 🎧✨

From learning and leading to laughing and dancing, NC 4-H Congress is proving that growth happens both inside and outside the classroom. Here's to more adventures, more friendships, and more unforgettable moments as the week continues!

Across our schools and communities, we are seeing increasing concerns related to student behavior, chronic absenteeism, mental health challenges, academic struggles, and dropout rates. While these issues often appear in classrooms, their roots frequently extend beyond school walls. Understanding the impact of childhood adversity, stress, and trauma can help us better support students and create conditions where they can learn, grow, and succeed.

By bringing together educators, families, healthcare professionals, faith leaders, youth advocates, and community members, we can have meaningful conversations about the challenges facing our children and identify ways to work together to strengthen outcomes for youth and families, particularly in underserved and low-income communities.

Families, parents, grandparents, mentors, and community members are invited to join us for a special community viewing of Resilience: The Biology of Stress & the Science of Hope on Saturday, June 13, 2026 at 1:00 PM at Nazareth Missionary Baptist Church. Meet & Greet begins at 12:30 PM.

Life can be hard sometimes, especially for our children and families. This event is about coming together to learn how stress and difficult experiences can affect young people and how love, support, and community can help them grow stronger.
After the film, hear from local professionals and youth voices during a community conversation focused on hope, healing, and helping our children succeed.

This event is open to everyone:

Upward Bound Students Host Town Hall with Local Officials

On Tuesday, May 12th, Upward Bound TRIO students participated in a town hall style conversation with local officials in the Media Room at Scotland High School. The event was sponsored by Scotland County 4 H and the Scotland GEO Unit of the League of Women Voters of Moore County and served as the capstone to a multi session civic engagement workshop series.

Throughout the spring workshops, students explored public policy, policy mapping, advocacy versus activism, the importance of voting, and the roles and responsibilities of local government. They also worked in teams to research and present on a public policy issue of their choice, with presentations evaluated by an independent panel.

The town hall connected these lessons to real world civic participation. After opening remarks from a student representative, participants posed thoughtful questions to invited officials about issues affecting youth and the broader community.

• Honorable Tim Ivey, Commissioner, Scotland County Board of Commissioners
• Honorable Ed O’Neal, Vice Chair, Scotland County Board of Commissioners
• Ms. April Snead, County Manager
• Honorable Jim Willis, Mayor of Laurinburg
• Honorable Charles Nichols, City Manager

The United Way of Scotland County and the Laurinburg Junior Service League were recognized for their generous support. Following the question and answer session, students and officials continued their conversations informally over refreshments. The youth, also known as the “Next Gen Changemakers,” received swag bags filled with a t-shirt, water bottle, notebook, pen, cup, and civic engagement resources to encourage and support their continued involvement in community leadership and civic responsibility.

We would like to extend a special thanks to Angela D. Galloway, Extension Agent of 4-H Youth Development, Martha Roblee, Scotland County GEO Unit Liaison Director with League of Women Voters of Moore County, the Upward Bound TRIO team- Williams, Director, Sarah Havener, Academic Advisor, Eshonda Alford, Administrative Assistant, and the numerous volunteers who assisted in making this program a success.
