đ¨ URGENT: Cold. Wet. Alone. Hiding in a culvert.
A Baby Vulture's Fight for Survival
We received a call about an orphaned baby black vulture who had been living inside a 50-foot culvert for over a week with no parents in sight. He would cautiously step just outside the entrance, seemingly hoping to see his family, only to retreat back into the darkness whenever anyone approached.
One of our experienced wildlife rehabilitators, Sabrina, responded to investigate. She couldn't see him, but she could hear him calling from deep inside the narrow culvertâtoo small for anyone to safely enter. It was a rescue that seemed nearly impossible.
Determined not to give up, Sabrina returned day after day, leaving a trail of food to slowly teach him that nourishment awaited outside. Then came rescue day.
A torrential rainstorm soaked everything in sight. Sabrina knew the odds were against her. But she went anyway â to feed him at the very least.
She sat on top of the culvert in the pouring rain, waiting and hoping that hunger would overcome fear.
Finally, the tiny vulture stepped out.
Sabrina grabbed him.
Both rescuer and baby were drenched, but at last he was safe!
His intake exam revealed what we feared: he had been without parental care for quite some time. Beneath his feathers, all Sabrina could feel were bones. He was severely underweight, exhausted, and struggling to survive on his own.
Today, he is warm. He is dry. He is safe. And for the first time in a long time, he has all the food a starving baby vulture could possibly want.
