🚨 URGENT: Cold. Wet. Alone. Hiding in a culvert.
A Baby Vulture's Fight for Survival

We received a call about an orphaned baby black vulture who had been living inside a 50-foot culvert for over a week with no parents in sight. He would cautiously step just outside the entrance, seemingly hoping to see his family, only to retreat back into the darkness whenever anyone approached.

One of our experienced wildlife rehabilitators, Sabrina, responded to investigate. She couldn't see him, but she could hear him calling from deep inside the narrow culvert—too small for anyone to safely enter. It was a rescue that seemed nearly impossible.

Determined not to give up, Sabrina returned day after day, leaving a trail of food to slowly teach him that nourishment awaited outside. Then came rescue day.

A torrential rainstorm soaked everything in sight. Sabrina knew the odds were against her. But she went anyway – to feed him at the very least.

She sat on top of the culvert in the pouring rain, waiting and hoping that hunger would overcome fear.

Finally, the tiny vulture stepped out.

Sabrina grabbed him.

Both rescuer and baby were drenched, but at last he was safe!

His intake exam revealed what we feared: he had been without parental care for quite some time. Beneath his feathers, all Sabrina could feel were bones. He was severely underweight, exhausted, and struggling to survive on his own.

Today, he is warm. He is dry. He is safe. And for the first time in a long time, he has all the food a starving baby vulture could possibly want.

❤️ THIS is what we do.
❤️ THIS is why your support matters.

Every rescue takes time, specialized care, medical supplies, food, transportation, and countless hours from dedicated rehabilitators. Animals like this little vulture have nowhere else to turn when they are out of options and out of time. BUT WE ARE HERE!

Please donate today to help this baby vulture and the many other animals depending on us for a second chance. Every dollar helps save lives.

🙏 Your support makes rescues like this possible. Please give if you can and share this post to help us reach more animal lovers.

Our Golf Cart babies have fledged!!

This last little guy was sitting inside the weatherproof window looking out. there were ways for him to leave. But apparently he did not follow the leader. Lol.

When we went to open the golf cart on that side, he showed us his flying process by flying up to the top of the open door on the other side of the cart. Lol.

In the end, our little friend did find the open door and stood for a moment, looking at his new world. And then he flew off so fast we didn’t even get a video of it.

Meanwhile, we were super excited about having the use of our golf cart again. But when we went to start up, we discovered that it had sat too long without recharging… And so now we have battery problems. 😂

Next next time, we will know that we need to keep charging the batteries, even if it’s just our little wren friends that are using the cart. Lol.

The bottom line is that we are very excited to have more mosquito eaters out in our woods doing their very best to control those particularly annoying insects!

The battery situation is in work as I type.

Thank you to everyone who shops our Amazon list!! We’ve been getting so excited that we rip the boxes open and start using things before we think to take photos. So, we are trying to remember to take some photos going forward. Lol.

The items on our Amazon list are things we actually use. If people don’t send things that we need fast enough, we literally shop from the same list ourselves. So please don’t think this is frivolous stuff that would just be nice to have. We use everything you send. And we are so grateful for it.

Behind the scenes: highlights from yesterday

Speaking of intake photos (yesterday's post), these came in yesterday. I'll add specific comments on the photos.

PLEASE HELP US CARE FOR THESE BABIES and all the animals that come in like this EVERY DAY! We release as soon as we can, but we still have about 200 animals in care any given day during the summer. (It drops 'down to 100-150 over the winter months.)

Why are these videos (that might look boring and repetitive over time) important? Because there are places that post their intakes day after day after day, but you rarely see the release videos or photos. Why is that?

We know of some places that take in animals and routinely transfer them to other facilities. We know of places that have high mortality rates due to the inability to effectively care for the animals. Or, (like us, sometimes) we are really busy and simply fail to post often due to the sheer amount of hands on work involved with wildlife rehabbing. (We are trying to do better with the postings.)

But we feel that it's important that you know that we ARE working hard saving Barred Owl after Barred Owl and hawk after hawk, etc. The work IS repetitive and it feels like as soon as we get one released, 2 more arrive! lol

But this is what we do. And THIS is what your donation dollars are spent to achieve.

THANK YOU for supporting our work and for celebrating each and every release with us.

Thank you to Officer Landis who shared the release of a Barred Owl that she rescued and then transported back to his home when ready for release. We had a 3 bird release day recently and this was one of them! (Already posted one of them and have another yet to share!)

🦅 RELEASE DAY: What's so special about THIS ONE? READ ON! 🦅

Honestly, we didn't think we could save this girl.

She arrived with a serious wing injury, and from the beginning we weren't sure whether it would heal well enough for her to ever fly free again. The outcome was uncertain. It could have gone either way.

But we believed she deserved a chance.

So we invested the time, the care, the rehabilitation, and the resources needed to give her that opportunity. Day after day, we watched, waited, hoped, and worked toward a goal that was far from guaranteed.

And now... look at her. ❤️

Seeing her soar back into the sky is the reason we do what we do. Moments like this bring tears to our eyes because they remind us that sometimes the long shots are worth every bit of effort.

When you support our work, you are supporting the care, treatments, food, medications, housing, and rehabilitation that make stories like this possible.

We NEVER want financial limitations to determine whether an animal gets a chance. We want our decisions to be based on what is best for the animal—not what is easiest, least expensive, or most certain to succeed.

By donating, you help us give chances—not only to the animals we feel confident we can save, but also to those with uncertain outcomes, like this remarkable hawk.

Please help us continue giving second chances.
🧡 We gratefully appreciate one-time donations.
🧡 We are also working to grow our community of monthly donors, whose ongoing support helps us manage the ups and downs of caring for wildlife all year long.

Every donation helps another injured, orphaned, or sick wild animal get the opportunity they deserve.

Please donate today and help us keep giving chances.

THREE STEPS from facing a horrific death to release!

Step 1: a kind person notices an animal in trouble AND ACTS by getting it in for care.

Step 2: a knowledgeable and properly licensed rescue spends resources and time to give the animal the care needed.

Step 3: Generous and kindhearted supporters make sure the rescue has the resources and supplies needed to help that animal from intake to release!

WE NEED HELP WITH STEP THREE!

This baby hawk came in emaciated, dehydrated and COVERED in fly eggs that were about to hatch!! WE KILLED ALL THE FLY EGGS so they did NOT hatch. We used our incubator (purchased with donated funds) to warm this baby, gave fluids, and gave several sessions of tube feeding AND LOOK AT THE RESULTS!!

This is his FIRST full feeding session!!! WATCH his crop filling up with each bite!! And now he's able to stand fully up on this tippy toes (with no wobbling) to stretch and sn**ch that food from the tongs!!

THIS IS WHAT 24 HOURS OF CARE LOOKS LIKE!!

But we can only do this work with YOUR SUPPORT!!

PLEASE DONATE SO WE CAN KEEP DOING THIS WORK! Funds are VERY LOW right now. Please donate what you can.

EVERY DOLLAR HELPS!!

FUNDS ARE DESPERATELY NEEDED! These baby hawks came in at different times in the past 2 days. Both are critical and came in with fly eggs and/or maggots IN ADDITION to being dehydrated and severely emaciated.

We've spent hours killing and removing maggots, and making sure the fly eggs never hatched into maggots. We have been tube feeding and giving fluids and using incubators to help them maintain body heat during this critical time. We may or may not be able to save them both. But we are giving it all we can.

YOU CAN HELP by financially supporting our work. I'm going to be brutally honest by saying that with all the animals that have been coming in, the core team of people caring for these animals have been burning our personal candles at both ends AND THE MIDDLE doing direct animal care. I (MAC) haven't even been able to post much OR WORK ON FUNDRAISING. So, we have depleted our emergency funds that we use to keep going during times when income is low. Most animals that come to us DO NOT COME WITH DONATIONS! (Statistically, only 20% of finders send any form of financial support to us for these animals.)

Our support comes from YOU, our beloved followers and supporters. AND WE NEED YOU NOW!!

Please help!

Why are we looking at a golf cart?

This is a very important piece of equipment at Paws and we can’t use it. It has been appropriated by a little Wren family.

We haul things around the property on a daily basis and this golf cart has made a huge difference in the lives of the people that are there every day working to care for the 200 animals that we have in care right now.

But then we discovered the nest in the glove box. And we all looked at each other and realized that life was going to get a little more complicated for us. lol

There are ways that we could have continued using the golf cart, but we would have disturbed the parents. We didn’t want to do that.

Our patience has been rewarded when we checked and saw this darling little face inside the nest.

Baby birds grow fast. And it won’t be long before we can have our golf cart back in service.

But we wanted to share this perfect little moment with everyone. This kind of stuff happens to everyone. We do understand how inconvenient it might be to have a nest somewhere that we didn’t plan it. But how beautiful to be able to watch nature unfold in combination with our world.

We have altered the landscape of nature, forever, with all of the human things that we have put into places where once it was only a wild world. I think it’s only appropriate that we share our space with these little creatures whenever possible to let them live their lives undisturbed any further by humans.

But I won’t lie. It will be nice to have the use of the golf cart back. Lol.
