Greater Scioto Valley Emmaus

Greater Scioto Valley Emmaus GSVE is the local chapter of the UPPER ROOMS WALK TO EMMAUS. The Emmaus Walk usually begins Thursday evening and concludes Sunday evening.

The Walk to Emmaus is a spiritual renewal program intended to strengthen the local church through the development of Christian disciples and leaders. The Walk to Emmaus experience begins with a 72-hour short course in Christianity, comprised of fifteen talks by lay and clergy on the themes of God's grace, disciplines of Christian discipleship, and what it means to be the church. ped in prayer and meditation, special times of worship and daily celebration of Holy Communion. The "Emmaus community," made up of those who have attended an Emmaus weekend, support the 72-hour experience with a prayer vigil, by preparing and serving meals, and other acts of love and self-giving. Men and women attend separate weekends. During and after the three days, Emmaus leaders encourage participants to meet regularly in small groups. The members of the small groups challenge and support one another in faithful living. Participants seek to Christianize their environments of family, job, and community through the ministry of their congregations. The Upper Room of The United Methodist Church sponsors the Walk to Emmaus and offers it through local Emmaus groups around the world. The three-day Emmaus experience and the follow-up groups strengthen and renew Christian people as disciples of Jesus Christ and as active members of the body of Christ in mission to the world. Many church leaders acclaim Emmaus as much more than a program. It is a powerful movement of spiritual renewal that is making a difference for countless individuals and many congregations. Between 1978 and 1995, nearly half a million persons participated in Emmaus. During this same period, the Emmaus movement has taken hold in 300 sites around the world, including the U.S.A., Australia, Brazil, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Germany, and India. Emmaus is an experience in which growing Christians of all sorts come together in common affirmation of the essentials of the Christian faith. Bishop Adriel de Souza Maia of Brazil worked to take Emmaus to his homeland because, as he put it, "We need a church renewal movement which brings together the two sides of the Christian life: prayer and action, personal spiritual growth and social concern. Emmaus holds together these two sides of the coin."

The August 20th Gathering included beautiful worship and a time of prayerful voting to determine the future of Greater Scioto Valley Emmaus. The community voted in favor of dissolving Greater Scioto Valley Emmaus by a vote of 38-2. Further information was provided about the new ABIDE ministry being created and a few last-minute questions answered.
Pursuant to the by-laws, the Board could make the determination of asset distribution and had discussed multiple ways to distribute them, including dividing funds among churches that have provided support, with material assets (everything at the camp) going to ABIDE. However, board members agreed that the community should make the decision. The options were 1) to transfer all assets to ABIDE or 2) all assets be divided under the direction of the GSVE board. By a vote of 38 to 4, the community voted to transfer all assets to ABIDE. (The difference in numbers was due to the late arrival of a couple of members.)
Gatherings will continue to be the 3rd Thursday of each month at Harvest Center Church. This will continue to be a time of worship and sharing. Updates on the developing ABIDE ministry will be given and an opportunity for feedback.
The Lord has been so very good to our GSVE community, and we are all so very thankful! And now we look forward to what He is calling us to in the ABIDE ministry! Thank you to the community members who came to listen, share, offer support, and discuss their concerns, with such love and grace! Surely we are so blessed when we walk in obedience and allow the Holy Spirit to lead us!

Just a reminder, fellas, that we have this men’s conference this Friday and Saturday. There is no charge, lunch is provided Saturday, and please invite all of your buddies. We have invited a number of other churches, and would love to see a full sanctuary. The speakers will be addressing how to follow the biblical model for being a man, instead of the model the world would like us to follow.
