The Jones County Genealogical and Historical Organization (JCGHO) held a Genealogy Workshop for the Piney Woods on Saturday, March 28, at the Laurel-Jones County Library. The event began with registration and morning refreshments followed by two speakers. Lunch was then catered by the Free State of Eats, and afterward a third speaker rounded out the day.
Speakers for the event were Jennifer Brannock, Professor and Curator of Rare Books and Mississippiana at the University of Southern Mississippi Libraries; Mike Bunn, historian and author; and Susie Burroughs, JCGHO President. Brannock shared information about the Special Collections section at USM's McCain Library. Bunn presentation a slide show on migration to the Old Southwest in the years spanning 1798-1840. Burroughs demonstrated how to navigate the RootsTech conference site. The three very different sessions provided the fifty attendees with insights into compelling new genealogical, historical, and technological tools and resources.
The JCGHO April meeting will be held on Saturday, April 25 at 10:00 at the Laurel-Jones County Library. Wyatt Moulds will be the speaker. His presentation, The Impact of the Civil War in Jones County, will draw from both his study of U. S. history and his own personal family history. Members and nonmembers alike are invited to attend. To celebrate its 30th year anniversary, the JCGHO will be awarding free 2025-2026 JCGHO memberships to all nonmembers who attend the April meeting.
