Kenneth Charles Gomer (Kenny) passed away January 14, 2022 with his wife close by. He was born on June 2, 1947. He was the fifth and last child born to Henry and Mollie Krug Gomer. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran church, then located in the South Side of Laurel. He followed in his older two brothers' footsteps and delivered the Billings Gazette. He attended South Elementary School, both Laurel Junior and Senior High Schools and graduated in 1965.

After graduation, he enlisted in the US Navy, and after 20 years' service, attained the rank of Senior Chief before retiring. He served on the US Carl Vinson, aircraft carrier, when it made its maiden voyage from the East coast to Alameda Naval Base in California. Much of his time was spent maintaining F-14 Tomcat fighter jets, at Miramar Naval Station in San Diego.

He married Sandra Bearden in 1970 and they bought one of the Pillsbury Houses in Bridger. They had adopted a great-niece of Sandy's, Angel, and were busy parents. He and Sandy were active in the civic activities in Bridger, all the while commuting to Billings to work at various businesses. He was a total computer whiz and not only taught classes, but was able to fix any problem a computer might have.

Ken and Sandy ultimately divorced and Ken moved to Laurel. In 2015, he was able to find happiness with his second wife, Opal. They were a team, participating in Exchange Club, American Legion, LARC and helped with the Field of Flags every year.

Over three years ago, Ken was severely injured in a 4-wheeler accident that totally turned his life around. He managed to keep busy, despite the fact that he was mostly immobile, had to use a walker and never did walk on his own.

He is survived by his wife Opal; daughter Angel; three siblings, two sisters Dorothy Rodreick and Virginia Gomer, and brother, Richard Gomer; also, Opal's children, Jennifer Fuller, Rebecca Burchell, Jake Fuller and Justin Fuller (grandson). He is also survived by many cousins, aunts and many friends and co-workers. Preceding him in death were his parents and older brother, Alvin.

Ken's remains were cremated and he will be laid to rest at the Yellowstone National Cemetery.

Memorial service is pending and will be announced prior to service.

Today we honor and celebrate the life of Baptist minister and social activist Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968) dedicated his life to the nonviolent struggle for justice in the United States. King's leadership played a pivotal role in ending entrenched segregation for African Americans and to the creation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Americans all over the country have been remembering the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. One-thousand U.S. flags added to a ceremony at the Healing Field in Laurel, a night before the remembrances for 9/11.

Happy Birthday to our Great Flag!

The American Flag flies in battle Sept. 3, 1777. On this day in 1777, an American flag flew in battle for the first time. This occurred during a Revolutionary War skirmish at Cooch's Bridge, Delaware!
