Wayne Mercado, president of the Oregon Federation of NARFE, writes a letter to the editor to his local newspaper that as wildfire seasons grow longer and more destructive across the West, now is not the time to weaken the very systems that help protect our forests and communities.

The proposed restructuring of the U.S. Forest Service — including possible closure or consolidation of regional offices and research facilities — deserves much closer public attention and congressional oversight.
