International Day of Women and Girls in Science!!!

Ahead of International Day of Women and Girls in Science tomorrow, we’re celebrating the organizations in our community that are supporting the next generation of women in . WISER is an all-girls secondary school in Muhuru Bay, Kenya, with a special focus on science, math, and engineering. It provides girls with access to a computer lab, robotics and engineering clubs, and two university-quality science labs where its faculty uses hands-on learning. In WISER’s graduating class of 2019, 43 percent of all students chose a degree of study and/or work in STEM fields.

The funds WISER has raised through their project on the Girls Opportunity Alliance Fund allows them to support science and technology programming for 240 girls, including regional engineering competitions, a month-long computer skills course, internet access for their computer lab, and a mentoring program that brings professional women in science and engineering to Muhuru Bay to inspire and work with students. We can’t wait to see these girls’ innovations and inventions in the years to come. 💫

We miss these campers already!!! Technology too often has a culture of invisibility, otherness, self-doubt, and closed doors. Adventures in 3D Printing was made possible through Aspirations in Computing(AiC) that turned barriers into possibilities by offering exclusive grant for future women leaders to spark interest in computing. AiC helps to change what’s possible for women in technology from K-12 through career by offering the kind of encouragement that combats isolation, enables long-term persistence, opens doors, and changes lives.

Day 4: We are sad that Adventures in 3D Printing Camp came to an end but we are grateful for the time invested into the future leaders in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics! After a morning of game designing and talk about making positive choices, the campers were presented with a Certificate of Achievement. This camp would not have been possible without our program leader, Micah Hill, a sophomore at Laurel High School, a grant from NCWIT Aspirations in Computing and a partnership with STEM Community Outreach!!! Until next year, ladies!!!! Keep reaching for the stars ⭐️ the best is yet to come!

Day 3: WOW!!! What an incredible day of S.T.E.A.M. (added an A for ART) Today had it all- starting off with learning basic coding language using Blockly to drag and drop program codes. One thing that we found important to the camp was to allow time for the girls to get to know one another. We did this through our breakout sessions where we tackle social issues and self esteem lessons. The girls are encouraged to encourage one another. As a way to engage this budding STEM community we held a luncheon where the girls had a delicious sit down meal complete with sparkling apple cider (it is the holidays after all.... ) and a blonde brownie! Next the girls had hands on time with Wonder Dots, toy robots, that make coding fun using apps on our Fire tablets. The girls put passion into making their STEM ornaments and we’re super proud of all their enthusiasm!!!

Day 2: Going strong 💪🏼💪🏽💪🏾 Participants experienced an exciting, hands-on introduction to electronics with Snap Circuits. Using real circuit components that snapped together to create working electronic circuits and devices for an engaging lesson on how electronics work. The first 3D prints began with the STL files created in Day 1.
