Ceiba or Tree of Life (Ceiba pentandra)

Give the gift of multiple lifetimes — a Ceiba tree planted now can live for over 500 years! This towering giant can reach 230 feet in height and ten feet in diameter, growing as much as 13 feet annually.

The Ceiba’s giant limbs create an umbrella shaped crown that are loaded with epiphytes — aerial plants such as bromeliads — where frogs raise their tadpoles in the tiny pools of water that collect in bromeliads’ leaves. Ceiba’s provides shelter for countless species of animals, with birds nesting and foraging in its tall perches, mammals using its huge limbs as aerial highways, and insects reaching the height of their diversity in the canopy of this giant tree. Ceiba’s flowers are important food for bats and insects and the fiber of its fruit is called “kapok” is used similarly to cotton, to light lamps, and to make soap. It was the most sacred of all trees to the ancient Mayans.

You can help plant more Ceiba trees by visiting prfrp.org to donate or volunteer and become part of the ‘Butterfly Effect’.

It's EARTH DAY 2023!

Pierella Rainforest Reclamation Project will be planting the final 2,000 trees to complete our project at the Las Cruces Research Station in Costa Rica.

Each of the six plots will be home to two different reforestation experiments as the growth of the 50+ species is tracked in the coming years. These plots will capture over 100 tons of carbon every year for decades and become home to thousands of insects, birds, frogs and mammals. Fast-growing, indigenous, keystone and pioneer tree species are being planted specifically to support the return of macaws, sloths, monkeys and bats. For more on this project visit www.prfrp.org/home/las_cruces/

PRFRP is collaborating with many organizations to help make this possible: Organization for Tropical Studies; Osa Conservation; Crowther Labs; University of Texas, El Paso; FedSoft; Green Cross

Did you know two-toed sloths spend more time hanging from horizontal branches, while three-toed sloths often sit in trees.

Earth Day 2023 is this Saturday, April 22

What is Pierella Rainforest Reclamation Project doing this year?

We're finalizing the planting plans of 2,000 more trees to complete our project at the Las Cruces Research Station in Costa Rica.

Each of the six plots will be home to two different reforestation experiments as the growth of the 50+ species is tracked in the coming years. These plots will capture over 100 tons of carbon every year for decades and become home to thousands of insects, birds, frogs and mammals. The Resplendent Quetzal (Pharomachrus mocinno) This bird was considered divine by ancient Mayan and Aztecs. It was also a part of Mesoamerican mythology and associated with the feathered serpent god Quetzalcoatl.

Beautiful, exotic birds like this thrive in the rainforest, but are endangered because of loss of habitat. Cloud forests, the Resplendent Quetzal's habitat, are one of the most threatened ecosystems in the world.

Help us help magnificent birds like this, by reclaiming rainforest for them. Learn more about the Resplendent Quetzal at prfrp.org
