HAS THE US PRESIDENT BEEN ELECTED?
Millions of registered voters, young and seasoned, cast our votes for a candidate to represent us as President along with the person they select as their Vice President every four years. The majority of us will concentrate on the two major parties; Democrat and Republican. When actually there are the minor parties, Libertarian; Green; Constitution; and others that have less influence ie., Kanye West. (I had to throw that in. But it’s a different post)
I hate to spoil the fun, about everything we have over the years believed or what we have seen and been told by the media. BUT... we the people must recognize we live in a new era. I for one, can’t take seeing all the young people who participated in this election - an election deemed historical but is even more unprecedented. We have come to the place where we MUST educate ourselves.
THE PROCESS...
When we selected our preferred candidate for President/Vice on 11/3, we actually casted a vote for an elector. Now, the media has everyone thinking and concentrating on the “Electoral” (again who we actually elected) votes that is determined by the popular vote is the final word. What is not shared is each state has a specific number of electors and collectively that group of 538, makes up the Electoral College, and our votes collectively or the majority vote actually authorized the electoral college to vote (for you/us) in the “Presidential Election”.
Now even though the Electoral (majority) vote favors the candidate that is usually announced by the media as “President Elect” before the votes (electors) are certified, that DOES NOT mean that person has won or will win the Presidential Election when the Electoral College votes in December. This year on the 14th.
What we have been hearing by the media about the candidate needs to secure at least/or more than 270 electoral votes to win is more accurately referring to... the “presidential elections”, when the 538 member electoral college (not us, not the 75+millions) elect the US President.
Yes, you are reading this correctly. Historically, the electors pledge that they will vote according to the popular vote of the state they represent. BUT, the majority of the states nor
the constitution binds them to do so.
IN CASE YOU ARE NOT AWARE... the Constitution states that the candidate who receives a majority of votes in the “Electoral College” becomes president. It says nothing about the popular vote. Also, please note that in July 2020 the Supreme Court ruled that those electors who were bound by their states to vote in accordance to the popular vote can now vote as they please.
I posted a few days before election sharing my hopes for the same enthusiasm and efforts placed on the presidential race is duplicated in less than two years in the next election and that we educate voters especially in the black/brown community, etc. Now you
know why.
Do you know who the Electoral College is?
Well each state receives a certain number of electors based on the state’s total representation in Congress. Or should I say that... Senator and Congressperson that you know nothing about but you voted for because of name recognition or an uniforming palm card, the democrat vs republican or the first name on the ballot.
This is not fake news. Also anyone reading this post, please make corrections. The intent here is that we EDUCATE ourselves.
