Last Thursday, September 10, we had the joy of gathering together for our Volunteer Appreciation Dinner, an evening centered on connection, gratitude, and celebrating the incredible volunteers who truly are the heart of Hearts & Hands Helping Seniors. ❤️

Our volunteers give so much of themselves to serve our recipients, whether through their time, talents, kindness, companionship, or simply making sure someone feels seen and remembered. This evening was our opportunity to celebrate them and the meaningful difference they make every day. 🎉

We were especially honored to recognize Ava for her extraordinary dedication. Ava began volunteering with us when she was just 7 years old, and now at 14, she continues to make sure every recipient receives a handmade, handwritten birthday card.

Year after year, she shares her time and creativity so that each person knows they are remembered on their special day. We have received more calls than we can count from recipients thanking Ava and sharing how much her cards have meant to them. 💕

Ava is such a beautiful example of the connection that can grow between younger and older generations, and of how even one thoughtful act can make someone feel valued, remembered, and cared for. 🫶🏼 Melissa Lesko

To our Board of Directors, thank you for giving your evening to help with the event and for serving dinner to our volunteers and staff. And to our staff, thank you for the care and effort you put into making the evening feel so special for everyone.

Most of all, to every one of our volunteers, thank you. Hearts & Hands Helping Seniors would not be what it is without you. Your compassion, generosity, and willingness to serve continue to bring connection and joy to the lives of the older adults we are privileged to serve. ❤️

If you’ve been thinking about volunteering, we’d love to hear from you. There are so many meaningful ways to get involved, and we would be grateful to welcome you as part of the Hearts & Hands Helping Seniors family.

Today marks 25 years since September 11, 2001, a day we will never forget.

We remember the lives lost, the families forever changed, the heroes who answered the call, and the countless acts of courage and compassion that followed.

In the days after 9/11, we were reminded of what can happen when people look out for one another. Neighbors helped neighbors. Strangers showed kindness. Communities came together in service to others.

Today, may we honor the memory of those we lost by carrying forward that same spirit of kindness, compassion, connection, and service.

We remember. We honor. We serve. ❤️

We are honored and deeply grateful to announce that Hearts & Hands Helping Seniors has been selected as a recipient of the 2026 Impact Grant Award from The Community Foundation of Westmoreland County.

This generous investment in our mission allows us to continue providing the services that help older adults remain independent, connected, and supported. From transportation to medical appointments and grocery shopping to meaningful social connection, these services make a lasting difference in the lives of the seniors we are privileged to serve.

At Hearts & Hands Helping Seniors, we believe no older adult should have to face aging alone. Thanks to the Community Foundation of Westmoreland County's partnership and generosity, we can continue building compassionate relationships, reducing isolation, and ensuring our neighbors receive the care, dignity, and connection they deserve.

To the Community Foundation of Westmoreland County, thank you for believing in our mission and for helping us continue this important work. We are truly honored by your support and grateful for the opportunity to serve our community together.

🇺🇸 Happy Fourth of July from all of us at Hearts & Hands Helping Seniors!

We hope you enjoy a day filled with family, friends, and celebration.

As you celebrate, please remember to:

• Stay hydrated and take breaks from the heat.

• Check in on your elderly friends, neighbors, and loved ones to make sure they're staying cool and safe.

• Keep pets indoors with plenty of fresh water, especially during the hottest part of the day and while fireworks are going off.

A few small acts of kindness can make a big difference.

Wishing you a safe, happy, and healthy Independence Day!
❤️🤍💙

Today, our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of a dear co-worker and friend.

She was more than someone we worked beside. She was part of our daily lives, our shared mission, and our extended work family. Her kindness, dedication, and presence touched so many people, and her absence will be deeply felt.

We are grateful for the time we had with her and for the many ways she made a difference in the lives of others. Please keep her family, friends, co-workers, and all who loved her in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

May she rest in peace, and may her memory continue to be a blessing.❤️

As we close out Mental Health Awareness Month, it's important to remember that mental health is just as important as physical health, especially for older adults.

For many seniors, loneliness and isolation can quietly become part of daily life due to the loss of loved ones, health challenges, limited mobility, or living alone. According to the CDC, approximately 1 in 3 adults report feeling lonely, and older adults are among those most vulnerable to the negative effects of social isolation. Research shows that loneliness can impact both mental and physical well-being, increasing the risk of depression, anxiety, cognitive decline, and other serious health concerns.

At Hearts and Hands Helping Seniors, reducing isolation and creating meaningful connections is at the heart of our mission. Whether it's a friendly phone call, a ride to an appointment, a helping hand with errands, or simply knowing someone cares, these moments of connection make a difference.

Here are three simple ways we can all support the seniors in our lives:

❤️ Check in regularly. A quick phone call, text, or visit can brighten someone's day.

❤️ Invite them to participate. Include older neighbors, relatives, and friends in community events, family gatherings, or social activities.

❤️ Listen and connect. Sometimes the greatest gift is simply taking time to hear someone's story and make them feel seen, valued, and heard.

Together, we can help ensure that no senior feels forgotten and that every older adult remains connected to the heart of their community.
