Wishing everyone a Ruckus Weekend!

Remember Ruckus who was found in hideous condition. We got her cleaned up, dental, spay the works yet something was still off. She was tested for Diabetes Insipidus which turned out negative but clinically she presented as a positive. We continued the medication and she has blossomed. Ruckus is a pistol and is quite the adventurer! She enjoys a great life because we have wonderful supporters.

It’s $5 Friday!

Usually we save updates for later; however, this is a special one. On $5 Fridays, the tradition is to introduce a new dog with their needs. In this case, we never had the chance. CMDR accepted a cute little Maltese the shelter named Miss Puff. She came in with severe dental disease of what was left of her teeth. Her jaw was thought to be fractured as a result of the disintegration of the bone secondary to the disease. She was not altered, dirty, matted, and underweight. Her foster gave her the name of Gracie and doted on her. We had high hopes for the usual dental, oral surgery consult was set, pain medication and antibiotics on board. Had all the labs done and then we got the news: Miss Gracie Puff has bone cancer both legs top to bottom and it is believed that is what is going on with her jaw. Surgery is not an option. Miss Gracie Puff is now hospice receiving the finest of treatment, loves, loves, loves her foster mom, gets special home cooked whatever she wants, and medications for comfort. Miss Gracie will know only the best for the time she has left.

This week we introduce Sylvie. Sylvie was luckily found by a good Sam in the heat. Sylvie was severely dehydrated, unaltered, no collar, no tag, no chip, dirty, unkempt, no teeth, long nails. No one has stepped up to claim her. We took her to Dr Huddleston who gave her sub q fluids, performed labs, vaccines, chip, nails, a**l glands, and a f***l. A day later the f***l resulted she was loaded with parasites. Miss Sylvie was treated for the parasites and is rapidly gaining weight getting ready for her spay. Dr H put her age at 12yrs old. Sylvie once recovered from her spay will be able to look forward to good days.

It’s time for our Weekly Update!!

Big Mum has had some schedule changes. Therefore, starting today, CMDR will be posting a Weekly Update on Tuesdays.

Last week we were very busy with Mr. Toby who had his bladder surgery and neuter. He was staying over night at Durango Animal Hospital when he developed a hemorrhage. This type of hemorrhage is called a ligament or muscle hemorrhage and his was quite extensive requiring IV fluid intervention and close monitoring of his blood count which had dropped.

After several intensive days of treatment, Toby was able to go home to his foster who is administering “sub q” fluids and making sure he gets his medications. Toby is receiving full on red carpet treatment all the while enjoying all the yummy food he can eat. A full recovery is expected. Toby proved to everyone he is one tough guy.

Rip D and his foster fell in love with each other and Rip D is being adopted by his foster who can’t imagine life without him. Yay for Rip D!!

Princess the little 16 year old little lady who was adopted from our local shelter and returned arrived in very rough shape. Anemic, dry eye, severe dental, underweight and filthy has made good strides! Her bloodwork has improved so much she has been cleared for dental. Getting that dental will make her feel so much better!

We have four other dogs in process and took in a stray who was in rough shape we will be posting soon.

Thank you everyone who makes all this possible and providing hope.

It's $5 Friday!

It’s been another hectic week! We have had some major surgeries, lab work, follow ups you name it.

Let’s begin with Tucker who got rather lost in the crowd. As you recall, upon arrival Tucker was one of the most shutdown dogs we have ever encountered. He was so depressed it appeared he was deaf. Far from it! There was concern he would not be able to handle surgery. Tucker was given medication, great food, and all the time he needed to recover and recover he did. Tucker had horrific dental disease and masses all over. Two on his chest are caused by being made to lay on a hard surface for long periods of time. Tuck went in for his dental and had four of the masses removed: one on his back end, one on the side of his right paw which was painful, one on his elbow, and he lost 10 teeth. He soldiered through like a champ. Once he’s had some time, the other two masses will be removed and two other little lipomas.

Our permanent foster Boom Boom Bat Boy lost the remaining 17 teeth with one being so involved the bone had disintegrated and a piece completely fractured under his right eye. The pain was more than could be handled at home and required four days of hospitalization. He now is just beginning to feel better and eating.
Wednesday our Toby went in for his bladder stone/mass removal and neuter. Stones were not found; however, a small mass was discovered on the outside of the bladder and that was removed. Sadly, Toby is experiencing some post-operative complications with bleeding at the site and is requiring very close observation. He is with Dr Huddleston today being evaluated to see if surgical intervention will be necessary.

Your donations make it possible for these littles to receive the best of care and better futures. We are deeply appreciative of your support on these $5 Friday’s that are a huge help with the medical expenses.

Thank you for being a part of the transformation

It’s Update Tuesday!!

This is a long one! Pull up a chair along with a snack and your favorite morning refreshment.

Last week was one for the books with some days Big Mum was in the car transporting/picking up/dropping off every two hours for 10 hours!

Let’s begin with our alumni Rip aka Dobby now Rip D. We were given notice a week ago Saturday over the Memorial Weekend he was being returned on Tuesday due to divorce. A plea was put out for foster, boarding arranged. Upon arrival, the vet was texting me furiously concerning his condition. He arrived with a crate a large cat would have found uncomfortable . Rip had been confined in that crate so long he had bent the wires. This is a dog that is terrified of kennels and crates. His teeth were bleeding from the dental disease and there was a sizable mass hanging out the lower left mouth. Rip D was incredibly stressed and scared. Friday, he had his major oral surgery/mass removal losing 10 teeth and the mass didn’t appear to infiltrate the gum/bone. Paws crossed. He was transported to Durango Animal Hospital for overnight observation. Saturday was his big freedom day with his new foster mum. Rip took an immediate liking to her and has all the comforts a king could ask for. He now sleeps in bed with his foster, has big giant “man cave” to call his own, a favorite patio chair, mastered the pet door, and assigned himself “Guardian of the Backyard” Rip will never be confined in a crate, Rip will never have to worry again about pain. He has wonderful days ahead.

Just as that was being handled a text came through and Fable was coming back. Our beautiful Fable didn’t quite fit in her new environment. She was boarded and evaluated overnight and one of our foster’s stepped up for her. Fable was pretty stressed so we made sure she had everything she had before she left down to the homemade food. She’s now playing with her siblings and doing well.

Wednesday, our permanent foster Boom Boom Bat Boy went in for his final dental and lost 17 teeth and one was so diseased some of the bone fractured upon extraction. The oral surgery was so intensive and the pain so beyond at home control, Big Mum took him to Durango Animal Hospital where he stayed for four days. Boomie came home Sunday afternoon still very much in recovery; however, eating and seriously happy to be back home.

We accepted a shelter dog in dire need of assistance and we will be posting more on her later in the week. Two more cuties came aboard from another rescue that has gone on inactive status. We will be posting on them once we get all their “stuff” sorted out.

Our Ruckus is doing great on her medication and if we can get her to stand still long enough, new pictures will be posted. Turner is going in for follow up blood work to see if he clears for a dental. Tucker is rockin’. Just rockin! He was so shut down it was thought he was deaf. His energy was almost nonexistent. He was allowed to decompress at his leisure. Tuck rallied around well enough to have a dental and some masses removed and he is a a new man! A bounce in his step and loves his walk. It is a requirement to sniff at minimum every third blade of grass. Wookie had his sutures removed and will be going in for his dental neuter in the next couple of weeks.

Toby will be have his major bladder surgery tomorrow.

In the middle of all this, CMDR assisted with a cat named Moon Zappa. That story was posted last Friday.

All of this is made possible due to your support.

Thank you for being a part of the transformation

A Sunday Message from our adorable Toby:

We intercepted his secret messages to all his friends :)

Hi everypawdy! Toby here!

I fink I figured out da BESTEST trick ever for gettin’ extra dinners. Yep! More dinners! More snacks! More yum-yums in my tummy!

First, you gobble up your first dinner. Dat part is easy. I believe in you.

Den, about an hour later, you gotta start your mission. Go sniffin’ around da kitchen floor. Check every corner. Stick your nose under stuff. Maybe do a little pretend diggy-dig. Act like you been searchin’ for food your whole life and haven’t eaten in eleventy billion years.

Pretty soon, your foster mama might say, “Are you still hungry, sweet boy?”

(Dis only works if you are an extremely handsome, very good boy. Like me.)

Den comes da magic part…

She makes you a WHOLE NOTHER DINNER!

Not leftovers. Not kibbles. A brand-new special dinner! Sometimes it’s even somethin’ different from da first dinner!

I’m up to 7.6 pounds now and workin’ hard on 8 pounds. It’s important to have goals.

Hehehehe!

Don’t tell da humans I told you my secret.

Rip Dobby said, "Goodbye" today to Dr Margolies. He had become attached. Rip D was decked out in a new soft collar, harness, leash, tag and every imaginable supply you can think of. As we rounded the receptionist station at Durango, Rip D made it a point to stop in and say his goodbyes to them as well. A quick potty break and he was jumping in the back seat and off to his new adventure!

This was made possible by all the good folks who stepped up and supported Rip D. Thank you for being a part of his transformation.

It's a TGIS day!!! (thank God it's Saturday) we sailed right by Friday... Ok let's get back on track. This week was one for the books and our Update Monday is on track to be encyclopedic. Today is all about celebrating Rip Dobby!

A bit of back story for those of you catching up: 4yrs ago Rip D found himself at 3yrs old at the shelter utterly out of his mind terrified in the kennel. The shelter stated: behavior. Put him on the list and stated they couldn't neuter him because of his behavior. He was all of 3yrs old. Still a baby and we can't even begin to imagine what his life had been like up until then. They gave him the name of Pinky.

We accepted this little funky fella who is a large dash of Chinese Crested so he's 90% furless and bestowed upon him the Yellowstone name of Rip. Rip proved he had a good heart and lots of potential. He needed some work and found an adopter who gave him time.

Saturday of the Memorial Day holiday, we were informed by his adopter they were moving the following Wednesday and he couldn't accompany the family. We put out a plea for foster and arranged for boarding. During his intake processing, it was found he had an oral mass hanging outside his mouth, his gums were bleeding from the severity of the gingivitis, grade 3 dental disease, and again his world torn upside down.

Rip tries so hard to be a good guy. I have visited multiple times and he greets me happily, wags his tail, and ducks his head for a pet. He still has some fears. He allowed all handling and let me pick him up for extra loving.

Yesterday Rip had his oral surgery. Big Mum transported him and observed the beginning of the procedure. While waiting to go in, little Rip went number 2 and it was bloody. His stress has been so over the top he has a touch of gastroenteritis. Medication for that was given IV during the procedure and will be continued post op. Rip was a champ....although he did draw the line at needles. No needles. Nada, nope, not happening. A little happy medicine took care of that.

Total extractions: 10. The mass was hard and luckily did not appear to go into the jaw bone which is big. He lost that left lower canine and the mass was removed with good margins.

Big Mum transported him back to Durango for extra special overnight care of pain meds, IV medications, and observation. There was minimal bleeding and he felt good enough to eat last night! Today his foster/adopter and Big Mum are going to meet at Durango Animal Hospital for his discharge and new beginnings.

The mass was sent out for pathology and we are praying hard it is benign. Keep little man Rip in your thoughts and we thank all of you from the bottom our hearts for the outpouring of support for him. Woof!
