New Jersey lawmakers have averted a funding crisis and overcome its transportation logjam with a gas tax hike that will allow it to finance an eight-year, $16 billion Transportation Trust Fund, which pays for road, bridge and rail projects across the state.

The deal raises the tax on gasoline 23 cents a gallon and cuts $1.4 billion in estate, sales and income taxes.
