Episode 8 of Beyond the Rink is live!

I had the opportunity to sit down with Devonte and talk about the incredible work he has been doing in our community for nearly 10 years.

We talked about his journey, the impact his organization has made, the challenges that come with serving the community, and what he hopes the next chapter looks like.

One of the reasons I started Beyond the Rink was to highlight people who are doing meaningful work in our community, and Devonte is definitely one of those people.

Dear Hockey Families,

Jake Kielb’s Hockey Foundation would like to share a scholarship opportunity that may be helpful to families within our local hockey community.

The Black Bear Youth Hockey Foundation is currently accepting scholarship applications through September 30, 2026.

Eligible hockey players 18 years of age or younger may apply for financial assistance, regardless of rink affiliation. Families interested in applying will need to complete an application and personal financial statement directly through the Black Bear Youth Hockey Foundation.

We know the financial commitment associated with youth hockey can be significant, and we are always happy to share resources and opportunities that may help keep young athletes on the ice.

Our community gear drive was a huge success! Thank you to the families who came out to donate, volunteer, and who needed gear of their own. Today I had the opportunity to sit down with Devonte Woodson, co-founder of the Greater Youth Sports Association, for an upcoming episode of Beyond the Rink.

Devonte’s journey began when he was an elementary school teacher and saw firsthand how many children were being left out of organized sports because of cost and limited access. What started as a small soccer camp has grown into an organization that provides affordable sports programs while teaching children about education, character, confidence, teamwork, and mentorship.

We had a great conversation about the barriers families face, the true purpose of youth sports, and what happens when children are given a place where they genuinely feel like they belong.

I’m excited to share this episode with everyone soon.

This event is not just for donations — it’s for the community to come grab hockey gear free of cost. If your family needs gear, we welcome you. If you have new or gently used hockey equipment to donate, we’d love that too.

We’re excited to introduce Nicco, our second 2026 Alex Bush Memorial Goalie Scholarship recipient. 🏒🥅

Nicco is receiving $1,000 toward goalie equipment, helping make it a little easier to keep growing in the position and continue playing the game.

This year’s scholarships also carry a very meaningful connection to our hockey community. Earlier this year, Justin Flowers, a local adult hockey player, tragically collapsed on the ice just as he was preparing for a faceoff during an adult league game. After his passing, Justin’s family, friends, teammates, and members of the hockey community came together to honor him.

So far, $1,852 has been raised in Justin’s memory — and that total is still growing. Those memorial donations are helping fund this year’s Alex Bush Memorial Goalie Scholarships, allowing Justin’s love of hockey to continue making an impact on young players.

This year, Jake Kielb’s Hockey Foundation is awarding three $1,000 Alex Bush Memorial Goalie Scholarships, for a total of $3,000.

Congratulations, Nicco. We’re so happy to help support the next part of your journey in net. ❤️🏒

We are honored to announce Sydney as our first 2026 Alex Bush Memorial Goalie Scholarship recipient! 🏒🥅

Sydney received a $1,000 scholarship to help with the cost of goalie equipment and continue doing what he loves on the ice.

This year’s scholarship carries an especially meaningful connection. Earlier this year, Justin Flowers, a member of the adult hockey community, tragically collapsed on the ice just as he was preparing for a faceoff during an adult league game. Following his passing, Justin’s family, friends, teammates, and members of the hockey community came together in his memory.

Together, $1,852 has been raised in honor of Justin — and that total is still growing. Those memorial donations have been entrusted to Jake Kielb’s Hockey Foundation to help young hockey players, and Justin’s memorial fund helped make Sydney’s scholarship possible.

This year, we are proud to award three Alex Bush Memorial Goalie Scholarships — $1,000 each — for a total of $3,000 to young goalies in our community.
