Today, NSEA, NEA-Southern Nevada, and Education Support Employees Association of Clark County, Nevada brought the voices of educators, education support professionals, families, and advocates before Nevada’s Statewide School Safety Committee to address a critical piece of school safety that too often gets overlooked: safe and adequately staffed special education classrooms.
Together, we called for increased staffing in self-contained special education classrooms, stronger training and retention of education support professionals, better support following serious incidents, and improved data collection to understand vacancies, turnover, and injuries.
Our message was clear: student safety and educator safety go hand in hand, and adequate staffing is part of our schools’ safety infrastructure.
A special thank you to Dolly Rowan, whose leadership and advocacy helped bring these concerns to the table. Dolly joined Misty Olmos, ESEA President Jan Giles, and parent and disability rights advocate Anna Binder in sharing frontline educator, support professional, and family perspectives directly with the Committee.
And the conversation isn’t ending here. Following today’s presentation, the Committee agreed to bring these issues forward for additional consideration and dedicate time on an upcoming agenda to continue the conversation.
