The Torah shows up right on time, as usual.

This week's parsha is Matot-Masei, and the second half is essentially a list — 42 stops the Israelites made through the wilderness. The Torah takes the time to name every single one.

The lesson, quietly: the journey isn't the boring part between the highlights. Every stop is the story. The heavy ones and the joyful ones both.

Next Thursday, 7/16, we're making one of those stops together in San Diego for Sababa Smash — Matkot on the sand, backgammon, prizes, and the kind of community that reminds you why we do any of this. If you're nearby, come.

Tonight though: light your candles, hug the people you love, and remember every stop counts.

This weekend America celebrates freedom. This Shabbat, we read about five women who made freedom bigger.

This week, we celebrate freedom.

Not just the freedom on paper — but the freedom to gather. To light candles on Friday night. To wear our stars in the open. To build community out loud.

That’s not automatic in every century. It isn’t automatic now.

This Fourth of July, we’re grateful to live in a place where Jewish life gets to be visible — and joyful — and full.

Wishing our community a Fourth filled with the people you love. 🤍

This week's parsha tells the story of a prophet hired to speak destruction over the Jewish people — and instead, when he opened his mouth, blessing came out.

The words we say about each other are never small.
