What an inspiring and fun event we had on 6/1. PAAH, led by , collaborated with FJMAA (Fujianese Medical Association of America) and Homecrest Community Services, and provided a free educational workshop and screening on fatty liver disease in Brooklyn, NY.

We offered on-site FibroScan screenings, giving participants a valuable opportunity for early detection and real-time education. It was incredible to see how engaged everyone was, with so many thoughtful questions ๐Ÿ’ฌ and a genuine eagerness to learn more about liver health ๐Ÿ™Œ.

Moments like this remind us how powerful community education can be. Together, we are taking steps toward prevention, awareness, and healthier futures

We are so grateful to be part of such meaningful work.

As the 2025 recipient of the Kathy J. Pedersen Grant to Promote Equitable Care ๐Ÿ†, administered by the nccPA Health Foundation , Christina led a community-centered project that delivered free hepatitis B education ๐Ÿ“š and screening ๐Ÿงช to underserved Asian communities throughout Queens and Brooklyn. Her work exemplifies how culturally responsive outreach ๐ŸŒ can improve access, increase awareness, and support early detection in high-risk populations.
This initiative also highlights the expanding role of Physician Associates ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•๏ธ๐Ÿ‘จโ€โš•๏ธ in community health. Beyond clinical care, PAs can serve as leaders and advocates in our community ๐Ÿคโœจ.

The Kathy J. Christinaโ€™s work is a powerful example of how this support can translate into real-world change ๐Ÿ’ก.
For those interested in applying, the grant deadline is May 28, 2026 ๐Ÿ“….

May is Hepatitis Awareness Month โ€” an important time to raise awareness about viral hepatitis and its impact on our communities.

For Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) populations, hepatitisโ€”especially Hepatitis B (HBV)โ€”remains one of the most critical but often overlooked health issues.

๐Ÿฆ  Why Hepatitis B Matters in AANHPI Health
-AANHPI individuals make up over 50% of people living with chronic Hepatitis B in the U.S., despite being ~7% of the population.
-Many infections are asymptomatic for years, leading to late diagnosis.
-Chronic HBV increases the risk of cirrhosis and liver cancer โ€” one of the leading causes of cancer death in many Asian populations.
-Liver cancer rates are 2โ€“3x higher in several AANHPI subgroups.

๐Ÿ”ฌ Key Reasons for Higher Impact
-HBV can be transmitted from parent to child at birth (endemic in many Asian and Pacific countries).
-Limited routine screening and under-testing in primary care settings.
-Cultural stigma and fear surrounding liver disease.
-Lack of language-accessible education on testing and vaccination.

๐Ÿฉบ What You Can Do
-Get tested at least once if you are of Asian or Pacific Islander descent.
-Vaccinate if you are not immune.
-Ask your provider about regular monitoring if you have chronic HBV.
-Encourage family members to get screened โ€” HBV runs in families.

๐ŸŒฟ How PAs Can Make a Difference
-Normalize HBV screening for AANHPI patients.
-Provide culturally and linguistically appropriate information.
-Understand stigma and approach conversations with sensitivity.
-Advocate for data disaggregation and better outreach programs.

Early screening saves lives โ€” and together, we can reduce the burden of liver disease in our communities.
