One month ago today, Nevada ratepayers showed up to participate in a public process.
Instead of being welcomed into a public building, many of us were left standing outside in 105° heat for hours just to get 3 minutes to speak.
If you watch closely, you’ll hear me say it was 205° outside. It wasn’t.
It was 105°… but after hours in the heat, my body was shaking, I had a pounding headache, I was exhausted, and my brain wasn’t functioning the way it normally does. That mistake is exactly what heat exhaustion can do.
What I can’t get past isn’t that I misspoke.
It’s that the people responsible for this public process seemed to think making families, seniors, and ratepayers wait in dangerous conditions was acceptable.
Public participation should never come at the expense of someone’s health.
One month later, I still believe the same thing: when everyday people organize, speak up, and demand accountability, change becomes possible.
And if our voices didn’t matter… they wouldn’t make it so difficult for us to use them.
We’ll keep showing up. We’ll keep speaking out. And we’ll keep reminding those in power that public utilities are supposed to serve the public.
