Food Hub Las Vegas Strategy Session #2, Friday, August 23, 2013 overview
In lieu of more formal minutes, here is my overview of Food Hub Las Vegas Strategy Session #2, Friday, Augus
t 23, 2013. I STRONGLY encourage feedback and discussion on everything that I reference below. Again, everyone, it will be very helpful if everyone provides a short paragraph as means both of personal identification of the issues and collaborations MOST important to you and toward the creation of effective working groups and committees and related project assignments. A major theme was how https://www.facebook.com/FoodHubClarkCountyNevada our emergent Food Hub group's mission and vision fits in and grows and collaborates with organizations, entities and groups currently existing in Southern Nevada, such as the https://www.facebook.com/SouthernNevadaFoodCouncil and Community Garden Steering Committee [see for example
http://www.meetup.com/wholeway/events/113888252/ ] or even Vegas Green Jelly https://www.facebook.com/groups/vegasgreenjelly/
or Project Angel Faces, https://www.facebook.com/ProjectAngelFaces or Green Chips https://www.facebook.com/pages/Green-Chips/118426108193877
The short answer is that this Food Hub is intended to generate and to empowering all of these existing organizations and many more that are sure to "crop up" over time. And we discussed the need to outreach all the organizations above and more. Rick Van Depien aptly summarized thusly at https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=446431638726654&id=118426108193877:
Green Chips shared a page: Food Hub Strategists for Clark County. Had a great meeting today with the Food Hub grouphttps://www.facebook.com/FoodHubClarkCountyNevada which is focusing on the interface between technology, urban food production, and intensive indoor gardening in Southern Nevada. This diverse group of go-getters is coordinating/collaborating closely with the Community Garden Steering Committee and the Southern NV Food Council
https://www.facebook.com/SouthernNevadaFoodCouncil. Great things in store for sure and we are excited that the Green Chips Community Web Portal will be a helpful springboard for all these great efforts! http://greenchips.org/2013/07/15/green-chips-community-web-portal-underway/
He also offered our group the ability to use office space http://www.linkedin.com/company/937737

I will add here my comments that besides the technologies and communication tools to make existing organizations more impactful, there is a real need for the creation of real, functional, centralized Food Hub here in Southern Nevada with a community kitchen, STEM education, food business and technology incubator and green innovations in vertical towers, green walls and green roofs which could be destination and showcase for the world. While this might be a long term goals, this type of multimillion dollar public and private sector initiative is well within the reach of this community, given the collective commitment and engagement of our growing group of local Food Hub enthusiasts and our respective network of supporters. When participants introduced themselves, several subject areas were emphasized:
1. Green Walls & Roofs
2. Green Education & Chronic Diseases
3. Administrative & Policy Issues surrounding sales of Green Products
4. Nurturing of Community & School Gardens
5. Enhancing the Mental Health Benefits of local Green projects
6. Veterans & Agriculture Related initiatives
We also discussed various tools to enhance your project planning and communication, such as the usage of Google Documents, the creation of Google Group and a Linked In Group. The Linked In group is now found at http://www.linkedin.com/groups/Food-Hub-Las-Vegas-5149989
